quick question regarding voice types/sounds

Hey! I have a question that I figured you might be able to answer.

I have about a summer's worth of voice training, and I train on my own now(very carefully, don't worry). My voice teacher said that I sound like an alto more than anything else, and it's true, the richness of my voice rests in the lower half. However, I don't have a "thick" sound like many altos have (like what you would think of when you hear the word "alto"), and I prefer to sing in the middle of my range. Also, I like singing mezzo songs, and I even enjoy attempting some easy soprano stuff. I sound good on songs like "Come To Your Senses" and "Who Will Love Me As I Am"--modern musical theatre stuff.

So my question is, is there a such a thing as a "light" alto? Or am I just a plain old mezzo in disguise? And what exactly is this Fach business and can it be applied to singers who aren't super-trained?

thanks so much! :)
