I'm not doing too well at updating this journal. I just don't have the time, and when I do I'm too tired to think. Might give it up...
Yesterday was a very cultural day for me. I was interviewed by BBC Radio Scotland regarding the tune, 'Flowers of the Forest', one of the great anti-war ballads. The programme will go out during the first week of January, and might be available to hear online. I recorded a CD called 'Flowers of the Forest' - the version of the tune in the Skene manuscript is the earliest surviving, and the simplest and most poingnant (in my opinion). There are many other people to be interviewed, not just me, including bagpipe players who served in the Second World War. I look forward to hearing what they ahve to say.
Following that I recorded Andy Hunter, one of our great traditional ballad singers, for a new website:
http://www.scotskist.com - have a listen. Andy's commentary on his performance describes fairly accurately my appraoch to playing Scottish lute music.
Went to see Miguel de Fuenllana today, but his wife said he was off to buy a new vihuela from Dias's workshop, to supplement the one he already has by Alessandro Batovo...
