Today I attended a workshop at the North York Public Library that I had seen advertised a few weeks ago for
Volunteer Toronto. I wasn't sure what it was going to be about at first but I've been thinking about getting more involved with community events lately and I figured this would be a good place to start.
It was pretty informal. A woman from the human resources dept at Volunteer Toronto gave an hour long talk about the many virtues of volunteering and what kinds of services their organization provides. I cut out during the second hour as that was when she started to go through their website without any basic computer knowledge herself which made it kind of distracting and less informative. I didn't mean for 6 other people to rise when I did though-- I was trying to exit discreetly when all of a sudden several people seemed to join me en masse.
There is seriously a lot one can glean for oneself from their website though. I especially like how their opportunities are categorized by interest. I'm beginning to see that I might not have as much time as I would like for any major commitments but it's a good resource to have, especially if you just want to do some short time volunteering for special events.
The woman giving the presentation made a very simple but good point about volunteering as an outlet for the skills one might not often enough have the chance to flex in their day-to-day jobs. This gave me pause to think that maybe sometimes we don't always find that perfect job that will sustain all our personal needs, but at least we can strive for balance elsewhere. So I'll be checking it out. If anyone else feels interested please follow the link above.
