I just finished working on my last project for Illustration class. I'm going to hand it in in an hour and then I'm done! I just started working on the project this morning. I know, I'm lazy. A little crazy too. I was feeling both cocky and apathetic about this last assignment because on one hand I knew exactly what I wanted to create and on ( Read more... )

Well, I'm so glad you asked! It's a neat trick I learned in class and you'll impress everyone when you go in with it to OCAD.

There are several steps to follow:
First you start out with a drawing or a photo. I used a photo to make this particular drawing. What you want to do is coat the back of your drawing or photo with CHALK. Then tape the chalk side down onto your piece of scratchboard. Use a pen to draw over the lines of your original drawing or photo-- as you press with your pen it will leave a chalk imprint on your scratchboard. You can then use the white chalk imprint as a guide as you carve out your lines. When you're completely done the chalk wipes off easily and you're left with only the lines you've scraped out.
Another tip is to is to keep your line drawing simple when you imprint it. Don't get too caught up in putting all the details down right away. As long as you know where you want everything to be you will be able to improvise your "shading" once you get going. Do not do outlines first, as tempting as it might be. Attack your white areas first and move out, you'd be surprised how very little contour you actually need with scratchboard.
Have fun! :D
