Tonite is the episode being advertised as "The Office.Wedding"
I'm a pretty big fan of The Office US, and would like to get into The Office UK if they rented out more than the first season at our local Blockbusters.
The reason I'm a fan of The Office has something to do with visiting an ex-girlfriend of mine while she was at her first semester in college. Her friend invited her and I to his dorm to watch episodes he had on DVD or had purchased on iTunes. Somehow, surprisingly, the show struck a nerve that was wedged somewhere between banal formality and witty creativity. Needless to say, it stuck.
So as a fan of writing and directing, I would hate to see The Office go down in a messy, overly-sentimental ball of flames.
Why don't I think it will?
Every TV show that has a wedding hypes it up to the Nth degree with whacky plot contrivances that last more time onscreen than the Wedding itself. They play overly-sentimental music and show clips fade in-and-out...which, y'know, might just happen when you get married, I don't know. On TV though, it doesn't work. It translates, to me at least, as having these characters' "love" shoved down your throat...sounds harsh, I know, but that's just a grown-up, jaded Me.
Still, all those plot contrivances were exciting!
Remember on Full House when Uncle Jesse somehow ended up stuck in a parachute hanging from a tree?!
Yeah, I thought you did...It was a 2-Parter!
Or how about the Saved By The Bell wedding in HAWAII?!
I mean, it was in HAWAII for chrissakes!!
So why do I trust "The Office.Wedding"?
A) Hardly any music is used unless it is something playing in the background of the episode. Only ONCE can I remember them playing music that no character was listening to somewhere within the story, and that was when the theme played at the end of the pilot episode.
B) This show's taken so much time to develop these characters that they're not just "These Two Are In Love" types. (even though, uh yeah, they kinda are)
C) No Hootin'/Hollerin' Audience...booyah
D) They put it early in the season, so it's not so "built-up"
E) Rainn Wilson
Sooo, even though I don't plan on getting married any time soon, I still enjoy a good wedding. They're almost always good, even if you don't know the person.
Remember when Jean Grey and Cyclops got married? REAL coming together there.
So, enjoy the show if you watch.
PS Damn I must have been bored since I wrote all the above.
