No appropriate movie puns.

The signs on Courtenay Place, near where I live, proclaim 'Improvements: Golden Mile'. By 'Golden Mile', they're referring to the rather non-descript stretch of road that makes up one of the main quarters of the city. By day it looks relatively drab, by night drab, but darker. By 'Improvements', the sign is referring to an ill-planned series of roadworks that are designed to make the street safer and faster to navigate if you're driving or take the bus. So, in order to make it safer, they spend a hell of a lot of money tearing up the corners of an already dangerous intersection, giving us blind corners and trip hazards to contend with, as well as the fact that there's nowhere that's particularly safe to cross, considering that it's a five-way intersection as it is. Further up the road, at a point where the only accident to occur in the last five years was when someone was hit by a bus that pulled out, they have replaced a pedestrian crossing with a set of traffic lights, giving drivers three sets to stop at in less than a hundred metres. Never mind that this isn't actually making the street any safer - people will continue to cross against the signal as they always have. Hell, I cross against the lights, and I'm not one to play chicken in traffic. To compensate for slowing down traffic here, they're driving through Manners Mall, which I've ranted about before, and besides, I'm bored with this rant now. Suffice to say that for now, the Improvements aren't improving very much.

This weekend was quite excellent, in which I was more social than usual and blithely ignored an oncoming assignment, like having a picnic in the path of a freight train. Friday night I discussed crosswords, cooking videos and the accuracy of gaydar at a dual-calibre birthday party, Saturday night involved playing three songs repeatedly on Rock Band because every new arrival wanted to hear 'Kung Fu Fighting', discussing being in the body of the opposite gender for six hours, and a raucous and interesting game of 1KBWC, and tonight I spent eating delicious food, followed by delicious pie, discussing more crosswords and the aforementioned blithely-ignored assignment, playing Balderdash and jumping to conclusions. And this morning I watched my friends fight off the bad guys, before I rowed them across Lake Michigan, which was quite temperate considering it's meant to be January/February. So, all in all, an awesome 72 hours.
