Cat's dress is very 80's Barbie again. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
Tonight's Guest Judge is: Wackadoodle Crazypants Mia Michaels, oh god. I may have drugs, but there are not enough to soften the experience of listening to her for the next two hours. Great Lady Terpsichore help me through!

1. Jeanette and Brandon were great, and they put the routine across, but it didn't really play to their strengths. For Jeanette "sexy" is so easy, so I think it's better when she has to put forth other emotions. Brandon's costume was awful, and suddenly he seemed, not unmasculine at all, but more gay than he ever has on the show, which didn't work for the routine. Still, it was technically very good and they were fun to watch. (I do NOT think it was a better cha-cha than the Benjelle one, though.)
2. I don't know why I don't care about Kayla-I want to, I mean to, she's clearly beautiful to watch, and an emotional dancer, but she doesn't reach me. Kupono was good tonight, but he's still a little inside himself, somehow.
3. Watching the routine again, I thought Evan really did do a great job of being much lighter, and having nice tiny movements, but I'm not sure the routine itself was great for television, especially with Randi sticking her chin out like that and therefore obscuring her face. I go back and forth on this couple, I admit.
4. They really committed to that routine and danced it well, I'll say that for them, even if the routine was a bit weird. I'm glad they were rewarded for that by not being in the bottom three couples, because everyone involved was taking a chance there and they all delivered. Jason and Caitlin are hit or miss for me, too, though I know that it isn't from lack of effort.
5. I wasn't surprised that Jeanine and Philip weren't safe only because there was a lot of other stuff going on that week, and in some ways that was worth it to see Jeanine's amazing solo on Thursday. But they also committed to a challenging routine that was fun to watch.
6. It's a real testament to the show, that this was so well received, and I think at least part of it is that the studio audience is packed with little dancer girls. I also think people are happy to see the "good parts" of a ballet in a nice easy-to-digest pas de deux in the middle of a lot of other dancing, and also not at the ballet so they can go "wooo!" in the middle. Anyway they were fantastic, as I figured they would be, so good on them!
7. Karla and Vitolio did a very good quickstep, but I still sort of didn't care. I know you liked Vitolio a lot, so I feel badly about that, and I wasn't sure he deserved to leave over Kupono, but I don't think Karla, certainly, had more to give to the competition this year. And I think the costume change was distracting, as well as the little story about mannequins, both of which I remember more than the actual dance.

1. You know, I have to agree with you on the seeming more clearly gay than before.
2. No, nor I, re: Kayla. She's all prefect technique and ice slivers. Not that she means to be, but, a dancer needs more soul than she seems to posses. I think it would behoove Kupono to take Tasim, actually. It's an Arabic dance form that's about the being inside yourself, the inner fire, but it helps you to bring it out. You can do a whole routine without moving from one place, which is a very different thing than not moving, because in Arabic dance, you're nearly always moving if you're doing it right. (Which, reminds me of a tangent I want to wander off on about pops and locks and dance forms some day soon.)
3. The thing is, I get so frustrated with Randi and her body flight issues because I believe she can develop it. I believe she has it in her. It isn't a size thing. I don't think she's a big girl at all. I think she's muscular with a tiny bit of curve. I like her shape. I've seen this in all kinds of dancers and I don't know what switch to help them flip to get it, but I hope she finds it.
4. Yes, you're right, they do get kudos for going at it with gusto. I did like that about them.
5. As you know, I'm not a fan of T&N doing Hip Hop, but I really loved the piece so I was surprised. Then again, I didn't catch the whole piece and I am biased in their favor.
6. I am going to be so sad to see them split up once/if (don't wanna jinx) they get into the top ten!
7. Yeah, I wasn't that shocked by the out come. Their quickstep was adorable, but it really is the kiss of death on this program, doubly so for unestablished couples like them. And I agree with the judges, too many desperate tricks in his solo, never a good sign.
