If you can manifest money from sky, then by all means let it rain

1. So I finished my marathon viewing of all the aired episodes of Awake, and I really like it! I've been a big fan of Jason Isaacs forever, and I like how understated he's decided to play his role--there's so much emotional charge and conflict inherent within the very premise of the show that it could be easy to veer off into hammy or melodramatic ( Read more... )

&*(Q##@! I just typed out a whole slew of thoughts and then LJ ate my comment. >:( let me see if I can reconstruct it!

I like Jason Isaacs a lot too. I kind of wish there could have been a POC lead. But I agree that the overall acting quality is high. I feel like some of the cases are fairly predictable, but I'm totally unable to predict where the show is going with its larger premise, so I can forgive them that. At one point I thought they were dropping hints that when we learn more about the crash it would explain the nature of the universe split. Now I'm not sure either whether it's just going to continue unexplained, as they've stopped pushing the "which one is real" angle quite so hard. I agree the dual tints are very cool and a really nice understated way to distinguish the universes for the viewers. I can't tell if that's supposed to reflect Britten's own pov though - if they looked different to him like that, would he still need the bracelets as a cue?

I was uncomfortable with the treatment of women in the serial killer episode - I loved the FBI agent's speech telling Britten to stop questioning her expertise, and I was sorry to see the show undercutting that by proving him right and turning her into a victim. But otoh the way they handled the female captain being able to connect with the girl who'd been abused really was great.

In any case, I am super intrigued and I hope the show keeps going for a long time!

Yeah, a POC lead would be nice but I generally don't hold out hope for that, sadly :(

I tend to find procedurals pretty predictable in general (like, 99% of the time I can guess who it's going to be by the end of the 1/2 half of the ep) so I don't mind the cases being somewhat bland. As you say, the larger premise is more interesting and unpredictable, so that's good enough for me.

I don't think the dual tints are really meant to represent Britton's POV--after all, in a few scenes we've separated from his POV (following the kid or the wife around when he wasn't there) so I think it's just one of those things to help the viewer distinguish since the rubber band isn't always going to be in the shot, lol.

Yeah, I wasn't thrilled about the treatment of women in the serial killer ep either, but I think the previous episode showed Britton being wrong about one of his cases and having difficulty admitting it as well, so I was willing to let it go as a continuation of the theme (believing one thing when the reality is something quite different, and having difficulty letting go of the belief regardless of evidence otherwise).

I, too, hope the show continues! We shall see :)
