Your whimsy is boundless

1. Last week I went to see King Lear for the first time. It's become an unofficial goal of mine to see all of Shakespeare's plays, a goal which is assisted greatly by living in New York, which is chock full of Shakespearean productions (including a whole slew of them by the Royal Shakespeare Company this summer, as well as Shakespeare in the Park). This one was held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, featuring Sir Derek Jacobi. He was phenomenal, as expected, while the rest of the cast was a bit--uneven. A lot of reliance on acting crutches and strange little acting tics, but still an enjoyable night (and I had a great seat). The costuming was subtle, but particularly nice, as well.

2. Also went to Hanami at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, which was very beautiful; the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, and the garden was filled to the brim with blooming flowers (including a gorgeous assortment of tulips). It was a lovely day and a lot of fun.

I also picked up a new cactus at the garden store and have achieved one of my cacti goals: that is, have a flowering cactus. It's incredibly adorable and the cactus formation itself looks a bit like a flower, with the actual flowering bit projecting up like an alien antennae. Adorable and strange.

3. On the topic of cacti acquisition, there's a new cacti vendor at my local farmer's market, selling very reasonably priced cacti. I couldn't pick one up today because I had no cash, but I foresee at least one new one in my near future, when the next market rolls around.

They're just so delightful geometric (an aesthetic which pleases me, generally) and incredibly difficult to kill. This is fortunate for me, as my constant traveling tends to kill everything but the hardiest of survivors.

4. When I went out to LA in April, I rented a car and declined the insurance because my credit card provides car rental coverage of its own. Naturally, the first time I rent and drive a car in a major city, there ends up being damage (none of which I put there). In any case, Hertz sent me a bill of about $400, I filled out a form online and mailed the information onto my credit card office, and less than two weeks later, the issue has been resolved and the credit card paid the entire bill. Awesome.

5. Am now off to the Met to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit!
