So I was watching Michael Buckley's (the WhatTheBuck? guy) review of Princess Protection Program earlier today. I love him; he's hilarious, and I found this to be no different. He ragged on the movie a bit, but that's kind of his job (and it kind of deserved to be ragged on). He made fun of the confusing plot line, the pointless bitchy girls, Demi's acting, and *gasp* the "strong lesbian overtones". Now, that's fine and all, but what induced this rant is the comments. Lots of people were upset at him for insulting the movie, but there were SO MANY people cussing him out because he called Demi and Selena's CHARACTERS- not even Demi and Selena, mind you- lesbians. With some of those people commenting, you totally thought it was the end of the world because some guy on YouTube said that there were two characters who acted like lesbians in a Disney movie. Seriously. THE END OF THE WORLD.
There are two main reasons why this is upsetting, the first being that people seem to think that he was calling Demi and Selena themselves lesbians when in fact he was referring to characters in the film. They are NOT their characters, people! It's fiction. Demi is not the princess of Costa Luna and Selena is not a bait girl from Louisiana. Duh. Differentiate between real life and fiction before you post your stupid, intolerant, and often grammatically incorrect comments. That just made me sad for society in general.
The other (more) main reason is that people were treating Michael Buckley as the biggest scum on earth for calling them lesbians as though it were the ULTIMATE insult. He could've called them f***ing c*** whores and probably would've gotten a more positive reaction, which is just sad. "Lesbian" should not be the worst thing to call someone, nor should it even be an insult at all. It's just an observation he made- and if the guy's gay, he's clearly not speaking that way to insult either of them. Those little trolls commenting on that video make me sick; he posted a video of Demi falling down in concert, and people are still WAY upset about him calling their characters lesbians! It's not an insult, nor is it a horrible deathly disease we should all avoid like the plague. It can even be rather nice sometimes. Like all the cute lesbian overtones in that movie.
