Well that long day that was supposedly going to happen on Friday wasn't as long as was previously thought. I ended up working from 12-12...which was nice considering I went to bed around the time that I was supposed to go in to work that day (Bernadette called me to tell me of the change). So I signed some papers, got two production shirts, and now I'm in production. It was pretty sweet. First we help set up a live satellite feed (or hit), that actually didn't end up getting picked up because they found that cop killer in the woods somewhere...after that I went off with Amedeus (that's right man...fucking Mozart...not really) and his crew with CW13 (the WB and UPN merged...weird) for a package they were doing. Its actually kinda funny, I got along with the crew much better than the other PA (Jay) who has been with Production for a long time, I guess I'm just a people person when I want to be--especially in a work situation. After that we did some crowd control for the opening of Horror Nights, watching "The Arrival" which is kinda cool--the icons all come out and kill some victim similar to the ways in which they do in the commercials (Jack puts someone in the blender (which is Chris McKie...for those who know him)--the best death). After that, I went around with Channel 13 news as they were doing a package on HHN. That was a lot of fun, the camera guy and I had a good repore--he even asked me a bunch of times as to what shot he should do...that was cool--I got his card. And that was pretty much the end of the night.
Saturday night I was supposed to do this mystery shoot at Disney with Adam's friend V's production company. I didn't know much about it before I went, just that it was at Pleasure Island and that I had to be there at 8. After Sam (V's brother/Co-owner of said production company) got there we went to the Bongo club (Gloria Estefan's latin/cuban restaurant/club). I met Amiet, "the client", Nate, the still camera guy, and Robert, who was supposed to be 'leading' the filming of the event. At that point Sam left, and I was getting ready to apparently shoot promo-style shots of the band "Caliente". Well, the band when on, and I was getting all sorts of those crazy angles that I get...going up on stage, dude playing the bongos, his hands, a cowbell being struck, etc...you know 'my type of shots' (if you know...). Meanwhile Robert is up on the 2nd floor getting wide angles and Nate is snapping pictures. It was a lot of fun. The band rocked! They were super nice, they even offered me to drink with them after the set telling me to tell the bartender "I'm with the band" lol. Anyways, I shot part of the 2nd set and went home at 11 after giving Amiet the footage tape and letting him know that I'm an editor etc. He was excited about the way I was filming and told me to send him my stuff to see if he wanted me to edit the piece.
Sunday rolls around and I get a call from both V and Sam. They tell me that not only did Amiet love my footage, but he liked it better than the other guy's (a full sail graduate...ahem). So at that point they asked me if I wanted to join the Crossroads Production Studio team as one of their videographers/editors (I don't know if they saw my footage, but they seemed really really excited about it). So we set up a meeting yesterday at the Millenia Mall to discuss the situation and for me to give them my resume' etc. So I met with them told them of my aspirations of being an editor, the equipment I have, etc. And they were really excited about it...considering I told them that if I had to pick something that I was 'good at' it would be editing...and they said something to the effect of: "Ha...well, if you're a better editor than a videographer, and based on your work...we have to have to on our team." So that's how I became a part of the
Crossroads team. Soon I'll have a bio up under "about us". Pretty cool.
Today however, I went searching the web for production studios and post-produciton houses in the Orlando area. After I found about 8 that I liked, I got their addresses and spent 11 bucks on postage sending out my Demo Reel DVD with a cover letter. So hopefully something comes out of that...maybe freelance, or even a job! Who knows with those sort of things, its just the luck of the draw... I plan on making this a weekly ritual. Showering the production studios of Orlando with my Demo DVDs as well as going to the various companies within Universal and dropping them off there too. One can only hope...now its just a waiting game.
So that's about it. Thanks for reading, until next time.
