Suck and the Whale

Wow.  I just saw "The Squid and the Whale" and it was...truly horrible.  Really, I can't understand how anyone could like this movie, it had no redeeming qualities whatsoever.  I just wanted to bitch about it on LJ cuz I want some sort of retribution for the 1.5 hours of my life that I lost.

You may be right about the humor thing, however, a child rubbing himself on a bookself, then wiping his semen on a row of library books just doesn't seem very funny to me at all. But as far as the acting goes, I think that they did do a very good job, however, I just didn't like the characters they portrayed. Jeff Daniels did a great job being a complete asshole father who almost rapes 20 year old students...I just didn't find ANY of the characters appealing in any way. Moreover, what was the film trying to say? What am I supposed to take away from this film?--That the world has instances of these fucked up families and that it sucks? No thank you. I'd rather watch a film for a message, a point, rather than simple reality-show style shock value. I can see where the film was 'reaching' for humor, with the kid cursing when he would miss a shot in tennis...but things aren't funny to me when the characters that you're supposed to laugh at are so unredeamable and completely unlikeable as they are in "Squid and the Whale". At least

I see your point. Now I understand what you are talking about. (This is Alicia: Maybe I've just seen too many sad, fucked up people-- it's less shocking, and more upsetting. Or maybe it's just my temperament. At least in Tennenbaums, there was a sense of acutal love. That made it all okay and much more funny to me somehow.) I'm glad that this didn't digress into "you're right I'm wrong" argument. So what are you doing for your birthday on the 23rd?
