i got my first ivy that's sitting on my windowsill. i find it comforting that i know some people from bridge-it makes orientation slightly less intimidating. but the real deal is still shocking. ladies are so liberal here. elaine penn is an amazing woman who talked to us about diversity-homosexuals, stereotypes, that kind of thing. she sings and plays the guitar really well and she's a lesbian. somehow i end up bonding more with older people than with people my own age. there are these two girls (they're sisters) who live in my house and who speak mandarin. that's so great that i can talk to at least two girls in chinglish. and people don't know where washburn is. we do get house shirts so that's cool. there is also this african american girl who really like chinese. her tones are more accurate than most non-mandarin speakers i've heard speak the language. and i somehow wish i was at umich so that i would know more people beforehand; i don't know if jane is here this year. i rarely see jodi. but smith is still a really pretty school with cool traditions.
