*waves* 'Ello all! I wanna wish everyone out there a very Happy New Year and hopefully 2007 will be a better year than last! I start this year off with a new icon tutorial! ^_^

Pretty sure this is translatable. Done in PS7

Prepare your base as best as possible. This works better of your base is cropped off more to the right. Mine is a screen cap of Bono from the Original Of The Species video. It was pixelated a good deal so I took my blur tool and cleaned up the pixels. Do whatever is necessary depending on the base.
I didn't sharpen mine, but if your picture needs it, feel free to.

Duplicate your base twice, set the first to soft light, mine is 100%, but whatever suits the picture.

Set the second to screen, 65% was mine.

Now for some colour fill layers.

Make the first a tan or peach-ish soft light layer, mine is #F6E0BD, 66%
The second one will be a dark blue exclusion layer, something like #051117. 100% Opacity.
Then make another colour fill, colour burn light reddish, mine is #EEE0E0, 100%

Duplicate your exclusion colour fill layer and bring it to the top keeping it between about 70-100%. Mine is at 100%

Then make another colour fill, a dark blue of sorts, #061D24 and set it to difference, 20%
Make yet another colour fill, soft light at #5F747D

Duplicate the soft light layer of your base and bring it to the top, keep it at 100% This may or may not be necessary.

Take this light texture by
colorfilter  and paste to your icon. Set it to lighten. 100%

Take your screen layer from back at the beginning and drag it up to the top of the icon.
Now make a new adjustment layer, brightness/contrast. Keep the setting to normal and set the brightness down some and the contrast up some.

Mine -
Brightness: - 17
Contrast: + 22

I added text to mine, using the font BlackJack in 18 pt, I wrote "Inspire" off to the left and set the opacity of the font down to 50% Then I added a musical note brush by
lil_brokenangel

Add whatever you feel like. Just don't copy this whole tut entirely, I like to see variations of it and see what people can do with it! I would love to see everyone else's results!
