"Счастливой страной" Австралию стали называть после окончания Второй Мировой, начала экономического бума, массового притока беженцев и иммигрантов. Страна тогда славилась открытостью и дружелюбием по отношению к вновь прибывшим.
Любопытно, что автор "прозвища" - публицист и социальный критик Дональд Хорн - в книге "The Lucky Country" (1964) о процветании Австралии высказывался саркастически. С его точки зрения, свобода, демократия, богатство австралийцев не были добыты и заслужены. Для граждан они - "дар небес" (следствие владения огромными природными ресурсами, удаленности от войн и других трагедий на перенаселенных континентах, благоприятный климат, экспорт готовых сложносочиненных социальных институтов из Великобритании, заплатившей за good governance драматическими коллизиями истории и др.).
Песня Gotye и "The Basics" ставит под сомнение расхожий миф о "The Lucky Country". Благосостояние и сейчас на высоте (Австралия на втором месте после Швейцарии по доходам на душу населения), а концепция мультикультурализма (равного доступа к возможностям для людей, идентифицирующим себя с различными сообществами) по-прежнему считается официальной, но иммиграционная политика изменилась, 77% населения поддержали " доктрину охраны границ", ставка на извлечение ренты из запасов природы привела к росту экологических проблем etc.
