Christmas Shopping and Consumerism

The worst of the season is over; the dreaded day of Christmas shopping. My brother, Silvain did most of the shopping, as I have zero money on me right now.

We went to Southcenter to do our Christmas shopping, which turned out to be a good idea as we had more options in terms of shops than if we went to Northgate. And while Christmas is usually about consumerism and whatnot, it was funny how all our gifts turned out more to be utilitarian than value-based, as we are a pretty practical family in the first place: a multi-tool Swiss army knife thingy for Tito Mayo, a bath package for Tita Michelle, a lotion package for Mariele, a Nerf gun for Alec (not too practical because, face it. he's ten), a wafflemaker for the whole family, and matching thermal gloves for Ate LJ and Kuya Christian, which they can use with touch-screens as well. Silvain and I decided not to get each other gifts this year just so we can have enough money to move into the Beacon Hill home, which is awesome by the way.

We had merienda at Chowking and dinner at Subway ($2 six-inch subs for the win!) and got groceries, as we were running out of rice and Seafood City was conveniently there. Oh, and Silvain got his very first credit card, which is a milestone for every American. The counter lady at JC Penney urged him on, and he applied and got it! He could only use the JC Penney card at PC Penney, but still, that's a fairly good starter credit card.

In other news, my boss says I am not getting a Christmas bonus this year, because I came back to the Philippines which was a totally awesome vacation and it was unfair that no one else had a vacation as awesome as mine.

family, malls, seattle, christmas, money
