Chapter 9 & 10/21

The hallway was dark, nearly black, and a mere human would have to switch on the lights to see where he was going - but this was a vampire. Quiet footsteps sounded as Hoya walked down the hallway, one hand shoved casually in his pocket. A calm aura exuded from the whole of him, one foot in front of another, shoulders relaxed, black tight pants shifting with every step he took.

A black bag trailed behind him, a red sticky trail of what seemed like blood following behind. Alarms rang in the house, Dongwoo appearing in a near invisible blur beside him. His own hand was stained red, and he picked up a white tablecloth underneath a vase, sending the no doubt priceless antique into the ground, wiping his hand off and then throwing it behind him.

The trail of blood continued behind the both of them, smart dress shoes sounding.

Then a trail of red cloth shot out from a door, headed straight for Howon’s neck. Right when it was about to wrap about his neck, no doubt to strangle him, he reached out effortlessly and wound his hand along a bit of it. Tugging forcefully, he heard the woosh of air moving, before a figure lay sprawled out before the both of them. He, or she, landed with a thump, hair in a mess. Glaring defiantly up at the both of them, she stood up again and assumed another ready position, clenched fist holding tightly onto the stick.

“I took a life just now.” Howon flung the black bag out, where it landed with a solid thump, and even where they were standing, the smell of blood was obvious. Ji Eun recoiled back, a look of disgusted horror crossing her face, before she straightened up again.

“I do not know why you came, nor why you did that, but it seems that another life will be taken away right now if we fight, and that it will be mine. Come with me.”

Snapping her fingers, the alarm died down and cut off completely with a slight whine, Ji Eun setting down the pair of cloth sticks on the nearby table.

Dongwoo’s face furrowed, and he stared at the shorter girl - something about her was familiar. Very familiar.

Howon paused, instincts telling him to not move. “And how do we know to trust you?”

Ji Eun’s red lips curved up in a provocative smirk, but she simply shrugged, a tiny jerk of her shoulders, and then she flitted away.

Dongwoo put a gentle hand on Howon’s shoulder. “Love, I think we should. It’ll be interesting. Anyway if she tries to ambush us we’ll be able to handle them.”

Hoya nodded gently, before turning around to face the black hole Ji Eun had just stepped into.

And then they both stepped in.

-

“My name is Nam Ji Hyun.”

The calm introduction scared them. Sort of scared them, because the main mercenaries of the Kim household shouldn’t and wouldn’t be scared by silly things like that.

“My name is Hoy-“

“Lee Howon, code name Hoya. I understand if you don’t want to tell me your name, but too bad, I already know it. Physical age 107, parents are Lee Hobum and Lee Jihyun, siblings, Lee Hojun and Lee Hojae, all four deceased. Soul mate, Jang Dongwoo. Cousins, actually, but you decided to go against the conventional way.”

She turned to Dongwoo and pointed at him.

“I would tell you all about yourself, but since you know what I can do, that will be all. Now sit.”

Bristling slightly in anger at the direct command, Howon grasped tightly onto Dongwoo’s hand and sat, face turned to face the bookshelf.

“My my, such a girl isn’t he. Ji Eun-ah! Where’s our hot chocolate?”

“Coming, unnie,” was heard from the kitchen, before the younger Nam sibling hurried out of the hidden kitchen, setting down four cups of chocolate.

“Here you go!” Nestling towards each other, Ji Eun and Ji Hyun snuggled under a spare blanket and blinked owlishly up at Howon and Dongwoo.

They stared at each other for a few seconds, before Dongwoo opened his mouth. “Why, why not attack us straight away? Why bring us here?”

“So we can rip off your skin and eat it piece by piece,” Ji Eun deadpanned.

Howon and Dongwoo leapt up, snarling.

“Hold your horsies, boys, she’s joking. Don’t you want to know how Sunggyu’s father is in control?”

They sat down on the couch again, eliciting a small smile from Ji Hyun.

“Alright, the story goes like this…”

-

Woohyun tossed in Sunggyu’s hold and groaned, head pounding in pain. The sheets were too cold for his liking, and the air pressing down on his bare skin was chilling. Unknowingly jostling Sunggyu from his sleep, he burrowed further into Sunggyu’s shoulder and groaned again.

Blinking sleep sticky eyes open, Sunggyu stared down at the object which had disturbed his sleep and had half a mind to smack the thing - oh, it was Woohyun. Sliding off the bed, Sunggyu stretched his muscles, letting out a loud yawn as well. Padding to the bathroom, he began to do his daily routine of washing up, pausing only when he heard Woohyun groaning in pain.

Was he too rough?

Hurrying back to the bed with his purple toothbrush clenched between his teeth, he began to pat the younger down, nearly crying out in surprise at how hot the other was.

“Yah, Woohyun, you’re burning up!”

The slave ignored him in favor of pressing down harder into the bed. “Now then you know. …Didn’t hear you being concerned about me yesterday night.” Mumbling that, Woohyun caught the thrown blanket up with his toe and pulled it over himself, moaning again.

“Oh my gosh. What the hell do I do?” Turning around, Sunggyu hurried to the closet and began pawing at it, hoping that he still had the fever medicine in there.

“Putting on clothes is a first. It’s a nice sight to see you hurrying around naked, but I don’t appreciate nudity when I’m sick.”

Drowsy eyes followed him around the room as Sunggyu assembled medicine and water, before bringing them to the bed.

“Enjoy it while you can. It’s not going to last.”

Sunggyu supported the slave’s head with one hand, then grasping at the packet, he managed to rip it open and press a tablet into the slave’s mouth. Water soon quickly followed, Woohyun’s hands clasping around his around the cup, drinking thirstily. The whole cup was emptied.

"Now sleep. I'm going to attend to some stuff, alright?

A nod was sent his way, and then Woohyun knocked out.

-

“That’s the starting of the story.” Ji Hyun set down her cup of chocolate and burrowed further into the couch, taking note of the expressions of horror on both Hoya and Dongwoo’s face. A tiny smile flitted across her face and she bowed her head, sighing deeply.

“Many years ago, when Ji Eun here was around five to six years old, Kim Sungha ordered our family to be put out of our ancestral home, for our land and possessions to be confiscated. Everything was gone.” She paused, red index nail tapping lightly on her chin. “We landed in debt, naturally, when the tax people came in. My father decided to sell off Ji Eun here.”

The younger sibling had tears in her eyes now. “But Woohyun told Hyunjin - that’s our father - to let him go instead.”

“Woohyun is your brother…?” Dongwoo’s eyebrows were furrowed now. “Isn’t that a huge blow to your father that the fact that the son who is supposed to carry on the family line is a slave?”

Ji Hyun’s lips curled up softly in a sad smile. “I have a very powerful power, and that is to convince people that what is actually wrong is right. More or less, I can turn black into white, hate into love… Woohyun, the ever self sacrificing boy, came to me and threatened. His bond with Ji Eun here was good, very good. They were close as siblings while I… was just further away from both of them. He managed to convince me to get father to think he was useless, then got himself booted away, or rather sold. He makes a fine actor.”

Ji Eun sniffled - eyes distant and far away.

“And we,” Ji Hyun gestured to both herself and the younger sister, “Has been working against Sungha and our father.”

Howon’s mouth which was twisted downwards through the whole story, begin to tilt upwards in a soft smile. “You’ve been double playing them then.”

Ji Hyun’s soft smile became a full blown grin. “We’re selfish creatures, that’s what I have to say. So how about it? You join us, topple both the people fighting tooth and nail for the crown, then settle down. I’m tired of this war, meaningless, and pointless.”

They hesitated. Ji Hyun shook her head, beginning to stand up. “I see you need time to decide. Ji Eun will show you the way out. We’ll contact you again, yin and yang.”

-

“She may be playing us for all we know, love.”

“She seems trustable though, hyung..”

“We’ll watch and see first. In the mean time, we have to separate Woohyun and Sunggyu. It won’t be good for the both of them if they actually fall in love.”

“…It’s saddening though.”

“Would you rather them have to fight against each other in the last battle? It’s like me and you, trying to kill each other for a prize. Imagine that.”

“…I get it.”

“It’s better this way, Howon-ah. We’ll watch and see first, then pick our sides. No matter what, I have you. Love you!”

“…Love you too.”
