Behold, the power of reading...

So I'm walking into the building after lunch just now, and there are two teenaged boys talking on the steps. Fourteen, fifteen, I don't know, I can't tell anymore. No older than that, anyway. They're chatting animatedly, and I figure they're talking about SlutSquid's latest single, "Tentacle Lovin'," or some such. The kids today, they are a mystery to me.

But no. What they were discussing was Voldemort's ancestry. Was his mother really a squib? One of these kids seemed to think so, and he was very interested in the possibility. I didn't hear any more, since if they're not talking about SlutSquid I'm not sticking around to eavesdrop.

I've never understood why the Harry Potter books are so friggin' popular. They're good, sure, but they're not that good. Nothing is, or at least nothing that comes to mind. Well, Elvis is, but come on, he's The King. Anyway, even if the HP books are more popular than they deserve to be, I have to admire them for the simple fact that they've gotten kids to read. It's not a magic bullet or anything, and it's not a new era of literacy and enlightenment, but every little bit helps, and Rowling has helped more than a little bit. So hats off to her, I guess.

In related news, if SlutSquid is not in fact the name of a band, I got dibs. I'll make millions.
