Cat's Corner Talks with Annette O'Toole About "Martha"
CC: So, why an episode about Martha Kent?
AoT: (laughing) Why not an episode about Martha Kent? I think she can be an interesting character in her own right and here we focus on the kind of lessons she can teach Clark.
CC: -even though he's already in college.
AoT: Exactly. I'd like for people who know the comics to go, "Oh, here's where Superman's so-and-so come from. Here's where he learned those values."
CC: "Martha" feels very different than your usual Smallville episode. Would you say that the tone of the episode indicates a new direction for the show?
AoT: We'll have to wait and see, but one of the reasons "Martha" is slower and more serious is because of its focus. I don't think that'll be the case with the other episodes, though you can never tell with this group of writers.
CC: Speaking of writers, Smallville producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar announced that the show would be undergoing some changes in writing staff. Can you shed some light into what they meant by that?
AM: No comment. Sorry. I would love to spill the beans on what's going on behind the scenes, but Al and Miles would kill me if I did.

Notes for Episode 05x13: Martha
Holly Harold - Harold is a Smallville writer who has written the episodes "Magnetic"(03x07), "Obsession"(03x14), "Facade" (04x03), "Pariah"(04x12), "Lexmas"(05x09), and "Void"(05x17)
Senator Rucka - Named after
Greg Rucka, a comic book writer who has worked on the Detective Comics (Batman) and Wonder Woman titles. He was also the co-creator of Gotham Central and the creator of Queen and Country (Oni Press). Rucka is considered to be one of the big name writers at DC Comics, along with Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Mark Waid, and Judd Winick.
Senatorial Committee Procedure - Read the scene with Senator Martha in session like this: the other senators were laughing at her hand-raising and Rucka raised his own hand to mock her. I'm pretty sure that's not the correct procedure for that situation.
Project Oya - Oya is the warrior-goddess of wind, lightning, fertility, fire, magic, and guardian of cemetaries in Yoruba mythology.
The Bat Embargo - The term that online fans have devised for DC Comics' reluctance to allow characters associated with the Batman title to appear in certain television shows. Usually used in association with Justice League. However, it is likely that Smallville could have similar restrictions, since DC mandates limit the appearances of semi-regular Lois and a recognizable Batman character has yet to appear on the show.
