It's not very often in the big wide world that people show genuine appreciation.
Even lower on the totem pole are the IT types who have to deal with other people's crappy problems all day. Short deadlines, short fuses, problems that people caused themselves and take their embarrassment/frustration out on others... When you fix things you've done your job and when you can't people start getting really irate.
Since moving to finance and dealing more with the hotels, I've found people show this type of genuine appreciation a lot more frequently - from my boss, from my team, from the hotel folks. Maybe it's dumb, but that feeling after getting a "thank you" is a drug that will keep me hooked for a long time.
Occasionally realizing it's good to be me is very empowering.
