all around me are familiar faces

Let's not talk about sports last night. Or how I managed to oversleep just slightly this morning. I made it here by 8:05 but that extra ten minutes I overslept really freaked me out. I think I'll make it an early night tonight.

It's Wednesday, even though it doesn't feel like it, so book meme time:

What I've just finished

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. Ugh. I felt like I needed a shower when I finished. Rachel basically wears the bad idea jeans for the whole story and I found some of her terrible decisions not just embarrassing (in a way that hit my embarrassment squick) but unbelievable. Who DOES shit like that?

The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1) by Rick Riordan. Ah, I enjoyed this tremendously. Riordan's doing Norse mythology now, though like the Kane siblings/Egyptian books, this does share a universe with the Percy Jackson stories. As soon as I saw "Chase" I figured Magnus for an Annabeth relative, and I was not disappointed, though I'd have liked to have seen the conversation between them that ends the book on page. Anyway, if you enjoy Riordan's other series, you'll probably enjoy this book - Magnus has a fun narrative voice, Sam is wonderful, I enjoyed Hearth and Blitz (they're totally a couple, right?) and this irreverent take on the Norse gods and heroes. Especially Thor being a tv addict. Though instead of Polish soaps, he's a fan of popular shows like The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. I about died laughing on the bus when he complained about giants being like the League of Assassins from Arrow, always coming back for a fight. So I'm definitely in for the rest of this series, and whatever crossovers he's got planned.

Movie Star by Lizzie Pepper by Hilary Liftin. Eh. Roman a clef about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Kind of fun but it did hit my RPF squick sometimes. And it probably needed to be even creepier to be really worth reading. Not gothic enough, I guess? Even though I'm not actually a huge fan of gothic novels.

What I'm reading now/next
I just finished Movie Star by Lizzie Pepper this morning, so I don't know. Probably Ancillary Mercy finally.
