Not a baseball person, but there's been a big thing in the rugby union about how young players are being more injured more often and it's often more serious injuries (concussion, broken necks and so on). The thinking is that it's to do with the speed the game is played at, that the human body can take only so much. I know in cricket that fast bowlers have their bodies break down a lot faster than slower bowlers, but I've no idea if this is true of baseball.
The speed and also the size - in football, particularly, the players are much larger and stronger than they were thirty years ago. And for concussions I think it's just that we are now paying more attention, rather than just ignoring the problem.
I also think some of it is how the kids are taught/trained when they're younger, and the demands on them are higher at a younger age than they used to be, so they break down more quickly, especially pitchers, where mechanics are so important.
