I thought about liveblogging the Oscars - I've done it before - but it was such a lackluster show that I couldn't really be bothered. (And I gave up on the pregame in favor of the Rangers v. The Former Rangers, I mean, the Columbus Blue Jackets.)
The thing about letting NPH (or Chris Rock or anyone not Seth McFarlane) host is that you have to trust him to be funny and to know how he's good at being funny, and ugh, the writing was not funny. I don't watch because I care about the awards (much), especially not this year when the only movie I saw that was nominated was Birdman. I watch to see amazing dresses and moving moments, and hope that the stuff in between isn't too unbearable. And there were both, so I guess it was not a complete waste of 3.5 hours, though there were also some seriously off moments (NPH making David Oyelowo tell the racist Annie joke; Sean Penn, who just compounded his awfulness with being a racist jerk. You are not just hanging out with a friend, where your friend might laugh, you are presenting an Oscar to a colleague. WTF?).
Re: dresses, basically for me, Scarlett Johansson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anna Kendrick, and Rosamund Pike won the dress war this year. I could quibble with minor things about each of their presentation, but at least none of them wore a urine-colored gown like Emma Stone. Emma Stone, I love you and think you were excellent in Birdman, and maybe that color worked in person, but on tv it looked like pee. The matchy-matchy shoes were a particularly terrible touch. *hands* Also, Gwyneth Paltrow, I don't hate you the way a lot of people do, but that fabric rosette on your shoulder was bad and you should feel bad.
For once, the music was pretty good on an Oscar show - Common and John Legend made me choke up even before they spoke, and I did not know Gaga had that in her. I kept waiting for her to make it weird and awful, but she just knocked it out of the park, and then Julie Andrews came out and it was beautiful. Plus, "Everything Is Awesome" was awesome! DARKNESS. NO PARENTS. SUPER RICH. KINDA HELPS. \o/
It was nice to see the folks who usually get played off just ignore the music and keep talking. And I loved Patricia Arquette's speech and Meryl Streep and J.Lo's reaction to it.
I started this post a while ago and have been completely distracted so I have no idea what else I planned to say so I'll just end it right there. Oh well. Back to regular TV tonight.
