And it's gonna shine right through your eyes

So the other thing I did yesterday was catch up on Jane the Virgin, which I highly, highly recommend, especially if you are missing Gilmore Girls, Pushing Daisies, or Ugly Betty, because it contains elements of all three: the strong, central mother/daughter relationship like Gilmore Girls, the sense of candy colored whimsy (and an AMAZING narrator) like Pushing Daisies, and the telenovela over-the-top-ness like Ugly Betty. Plus its own unique charms, which include Gina Rodriguez, who is utterly delightful as the titular Jane, Anthony Mendez as the Narrator, and Jaime Camil as Rogelio De La Vega, Jane's telenovela star father. It's funny without being mean, heartwarming without being twee, and it's got enough plot to satisfy any soap opera junkie. And it balances all of it with great aplomb.

Plus, most of the action is driven by the women - Jane, Xiomara, Petra, and Luisa are all the main movers of the plot (and while Alba is not a main agent of the plot, I do love how supportive of Xiomara and Jane she is, even when she disapproves - she is much more emotionally available than Emily Gilmore). And even though it has a love triangle (possibly more than one going forward), Jane's two suitors are pretty well drawn, so you never feel like "of course she's going to pick X! Y is terrible!" But really, Jane herself is the best thing about the show - I already love her and want her to be happy.

Anyway, watch this show! It's received a full season order from the CW, but I don't think its ratings are very good, even by CW standards. I know it's on against Sleepy Hollow, which is why I put off watching it, but it's definitely worth watching, and the episodes are available on the CW website (not the pilot, though, which is just dumb).

I need an icon.
