stay thirsty, my friends

So here is a weird thing that happened this evening: L. and I were going to dinner, and she texted me to let me know she was in a bar a couple doors down from the restaurant where we were supposed to meet, and she needed cash because their computers were down and they couldn't take credit cards. So I met her there and also ordered a beer, and we sat and chatted for a while and then got the check. The bill was $15.24 (for two pints! I guess there's no happy hour special for the Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen). I gave the bartender a twenty. She brought us back a single. I don't understand what happened, and that was a dollar more tip than I would have left her, given that she poured the beer before she informed L. it was cash-only and that's kind of shitty imo, but she was nowhere to be found so we could ask where the rest of our change was, so I pocketed the dollar and we left for dinner. Which was quite good and had nice and friendly service for which we happily tipped ~20%.

I don't even know what this woman was thinking by keeping $3.76 of my change. There was nothing on the bill about gratuities being included/automatically added. If she'd kept the whole $20 I would have figured she thought we said to keep it/we didn't want change, but just giving back a dollar was so weird.

L. is now soured on the place but we might end up back there until we find another bar we like that serves that grapefruit beer.

Work was a little cranky-making today but my board packets went out on time and I only stayed an extra 30 minutes on a summer Friday, and not even because of that. (I won't go into the annoying consultants who are supposed to make life easier but somehow never do, but it was because of them.)

Now I just have to get through the meeting on Wednesday afternoon, and my summer should be a little less hectic.

So that was quite a game last night, huh? It was definitely the best the Rangers have put together in the playoffs, even if the Habs looked totally exhausted. They're going to need to play at that level every game to win at all in the finals, but oh my god, they're going to the finals! 1994 was the BEST and getting to do it again is AMAZING. There's really nothing like the long-term intensity of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Football playoffs are great but it's a weekend-only thing. Baseball lasts as long but doesn't manage to sustain the level of tension so high for so long - the rhythm of the game is much slower, after all - and I don't care much about basketball, though when both the Knicks and the Rangers are in the playoffs, it's a great thing for NYC.

Anyway! Of course Marty St. Louis is a big part of the story, but you might not know about Dominic Moore, the guy who scored the winning - only - goal last night for the Rangers, and it's a sad but ultimately hopeful story.
