i'll be dying for your sins, and aiding to the cause

My Russian-speaking friends - or you know, Russian-speaking people who are reading this, I don't want to label our relationship if you're not comfortable with that - what's a cute Russian name for a tiny puppy? Like the kind of thing you'd give to the runt of the litter but also the kind of thing where you nickname a big guy Tiny or a bald guy Curly? Do they do that in Russian? Or something similar. Like how my aunt named her dog Elefante (usually shortened to Ella), because it was a strong name for a small dog.

In somewhat related news *cough*
selenak wrote a fantastic review of Cap 2, really getting at why the movie is so good, without devolving like me into a morass of BUCKY FEELS. What I'm saying is, you will probably enjoy this movie a lot even if you are unafflicted with Bucky feels, and
selenak's review will explain why, though it is super spoilery.

If you've posted about the movie, you should link me, so I can read about it, since I can't see it again until Thursday.

Speaking of spoilers, I was finally able to watch Snowpiercer last night, which is good, because tumblr is rife with spoilery gif sets. Outside the cut, I will say that I think it's an interesting but flawed movie that doesn't ultimately work for me, but maybe not for the reasons it doesn't work for other people? Also, I would offer a blanket trigger warning, except, notably there is no sexual violence in the film. Everything else you might possibly warn for, but surprisingly, not that. You can ask me about anything specific you're concerned about.

The reason I think the movie doesn't ultimately work for me is that I, um, laughed at the big revelation. Like, not the overall revelation of cannibalism - that's not only horrific and terrifying but believable (I've just spend the past few months reading about the Siege of Leningrad, not to mention the war in the Pacific, so it's not like it wasn't front and center in my mind of terrible things humanity can and has done in extreme circumstances), but when he said the thing about babies tasting best, I was just jarred out of the story, like, this movie is one big dead baby joke?! Which I feel is probably not a normal response to such a revelation? (I mean, if they had revealed that the protein bars were made of babies, I might have been more horrified and less completely jarred out of the movie, because SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE, but maybe not.) But uh, it's the one I had. *hands*

And he hated himself for it! It wasn't like he was enjoying being a cannibal! So I feel like he had the appropriate response! And he clearly saw his inability to sacrifice his arm as an extension of his own moral cowardice (which is why, of course, he has to lose an arm to save little Timmy, down the well. I mean, in the engine. Also, eternal trains are creepy. I mean, Blaine the Mono, amiright?) so he wasn't a sociopath or anything. And it turns out he was being groomed as a "heroic" sacrifice anyway, so.

And I was sad when Jamie Bell cacked it, because I was totally shipping them! The fact that Curtis was going to kill him for food kind of put a damper on that, though, so even if he'd survived I'm not sure my shippy feelings would have.

I'm also not sure how to take the ending, because the polar bear was there, so obviously not all life is gone, but also, it's a 17 yo girl and a 5 yo boy. I'm not sure I see them surviving for very long, so unless there's a secret outpost of humanity underground, that's curtains for us, which I guess the movie might be saying isn't a bad thing, all things considered. I think Nam had plans (the handful of dirt he grabbed - was he taking seeds? idek) but I don't think he got out.

I also thought it was really well-done in terms of making it look like a live-action comic. I haven't read the Le Transperceneige, but watching the movie, I could totally see how a lot of scenes would be framed as comic panels, and the action scenes all had a fierce kinetic energy to them, though I couldn't always tell what was going on. I'm not sure how it will do in the US market (and I'm not sure now if I would go see it), but I feel like it should be released so we can find out.

Now I have to get ready to go grocery shopping and then bake cookies and make ice cream.
