the way you changed my life

We're battening down the hatches for another snowstorm tonight, and I was talking to a co-worker who complained that the NYC public schools have been really reluctant to close this year for weather, and I was like, man, when I was a kid, they NEVER closed. Like, okay, the blizzard of '77, yeah, and Hurricane Gloria in '85, but other than that, I ( Read more... )

I lived in northeast Pennsylvania for the winter of 1996, where the snow was bad they closed the highways, something they only do for the snowpocalypse since snow is status quo for winters there. Finally, after days stuck in the house, my mom and I sprayed our shovels with Pam to give them more of a non-stick surface and shoveled six feet of snow out of the driveway.

But I'm still bitching about this winter's snow in NYC since I didn't have to try to parallel park in PA, the roads are tended better, and the people there knew how to deal with and drive in snow.

Yeah, it's fine when we get two big storms a year months apart, but this every week thing is really not on.

I'm so tired of having to dig out my car 1-3 times a week. Also, so many former parking spots in my area are now usable only by highriding SUVs.

Since I don't have a car, my biggest issue is the gross slushy corners with puddles that are as deep as my boots! Bah.

I can't find a new pair of winter boots that fit me, so I'm wearing old, cracked, leaky boots after I put a plastic bag on each foot. I can feel the cold of the slush coming in but less of the wet. Some of the snow near the curbs in my area is so deep you go in to above your knee if it hasn't completely iced over.

I'm done. We've already completely punched out our winter card by now, haven't we? Below-zero wind chill, snow, single-digit cold, sleet, snow, slush, snow, hail, snow....

Yeah, I had a really hard time finding boots and the ones I did find come just above my ankles, so it's easy for stuff to get in over the top once it's at the height it is now. But they have been great otherwise -warm and non-slippery.

I'm right there with you. Not only do I think we're done for this year, but I feel like we've covered the next ten years with this winter.
