Honest to god, I still don't understand how there are only 34 Steve/Bucky/Natasha stories on AO3. How is that even POSSIBLE? BEST OT3 SHOULD HAVE WAY MORE FIC. Hopefully Captain America/Winter Soldier will bump that number up (as well as the number of Steve/Natasha and Steve/Bucky stories that are actually about them). I still haven't figured out an OT3 tag for them on tumblr, though.

Wednesday reading meme:

What I just finished

In the last week, I've read Unwind by Neal Shusterman - even accepting the ridiculous premise, I think this story bit off way more than it could chew, philosophically. I also am not sure Lev adds up as a character. I liked Risa and Connor though, even though almost nothing in the story was surprising. I suppose I will eventually read the second book (and the third whenever it comes out).

I also read Treachery in the Yard by Adimchinma Ibe, which is a police procedural set in Nigeria. I liked it but I found it pretty tell-y instead of show-y and it ends pretty abruptly. I liked Detective Peterside, though, and I would probably read more books about him if Ibe writes more.

Yesterday, on the train, I finished The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen - I really liked it, but then it is the kind of story that is basically built to appeal to me. It's about a girl named Macy who is just coming out of the numbness she wrapped herself up in after the death of her father. She tries to be perfect and fine so she's not a burden on her mother, and over summer vacation, she ends up making some new friends and finally allowing herself to feel and mourn and move on. I really liked it.

What I'm reading now

I'm a little over halfway finished with When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, which I'm enjoying so far. It's about a 12 yo girl who is kind of obsessed with A Wrinkle in Time and her life with her single mom on the Upper West Side in the late 70s. Her mother is obsessed with the $20,000 Pyramid, so most chapters are named after categories, like on that show. Possibly something supernatural or SF-ish is happening. I expect to finish it shortly.

What I'm reading next

When You Reach Me is the last of the library books I have out, so I don't know what's next. I will have to look over all the stuff I actually own, but without a due date to motivate me, who knows?

I have again managed to do some writing, but only by coming at it on the oblique, without really thinking about it, just adding stuff that occurs to me and seems necessary, rather than trying to figure out what comes next or how to manage the story as a whole. I've always been a really by the seat of my pants writer, figuring that the story would figure itself out as it went, and maybe I've lost some of that confidence (or maybe it was nonchalance?) over the years, and that's the problem. The more I know about writing, the less equipped I feel to write. Sigh.
