he said, "I am not fighting for you any more."

Yesterday afternoon, I saw Star Trek Into Darkness with a bunch of fangirls and... okay. the movie itself is moderately entertaining (especially if you don't think too hard about it), and quite often hilarious, though not, I think, in ways it was intended to be? Also, there was nowhere near enough Karl Urban. I JUST WANT TO LOOK AT HIS PRETTY FACE ( Read more... )

he could still be one of the augmented supermen who was unfrozen in order to help militarize Starfleet, and they could have panned over the cryotubes and we could have seen someone who resembled Khan still asleep

THAT would have been great! A Wrath of Khan remix without coopting Khan.

Right? And it would have allowed them to make some nods at WoK and also have Cumberbatch star without having all this awful bait and switch about who he's playing. It would have trusted the audience a lot more than this movie did.

I saw it yesterday too, and I totally agree with you about pretty much everything. That being said (a la Nimoy!Spock), I did enjoy the movie - it's actiony, it's funny (and yes, even unintentionally so), it's got good pacing for the most part. But I really wish they would've left Khan out of it. Like you, I think BC was a decent villain, and I was surprised I didn't see Sherlock in him here, but there's no way he's Khan. It doesn't work ( ... )

Oh, I enjoyed it while I was watching it. It's big dumb summer fun. But it really misses the mark when it tries to crib from Wrath of Khan. I also think it was trying to say things about our post-9/11 stance on terror and how we create our own enemies etc. but it was just so half-assed that it didn't work.

(I really wish they hadn't killed Pike, even if they wanted motivation. Killing a bunch of innocent people should actually be enough.)

I agree. I always hate when the heroes need some personal motivation. Um, a whole lot of people died and the planet may be in danger. That should be enough!

ng. Someone mentioned that it was almost a parody in some parts, although an unintentional one, I think. There's apparently a fine line between homage and parody, and I think sometimes Abrams badly misstepped.

YES. Exactly!

I will come back to read this once I've seen theories, probably not until next week!

ENOUGH WITH THE LENS FLARES, JJ.

Here is a Bones icon for you. :)

This review is absolutely spot on, yes. I thought the closest they got to this being a genuinely good movie is Scotty's refusal to sign for the torpedoes and Uhura's insistence they don't go in all guns blazing - I mean, isn't that the kind of darkness that they're supposed to be fighting? I wanted to like this, so much, and I did like loads about it, but the reasons you identify are all the ones that made me unhappy.

Yeah, the seeds of it were there - and you can tell that was the theme, sort of, but it just got buried underneath poor decisions by the writers.

YES to all of this!

Including this:

I find him really unattractive so looking at his face bothers me

It's odd: there are guys I find unattractive, but their faces don't really bother me (lots of character actors). This guy? Something about his face just bothers me.

He might have made a good Voldemort, though. I mean, if Ralph Fiennes had decided not to.

Anyway. YES, Marcus starting a war, and the militarization of Starfleet would have been a much more interesting, philosophical film (assuming our heroes are opposed to this). SO much more interesting than an incredibly weak remake of "The Wrath of Khan." It would have given Uhura so much more to do. It might have given Carol much more to do. It would have meant MORE KLINGONS, and there is no bad there, as far as I'm concerned.

But, no. *sigh*

The lack of McCoy was just depressing.

Yeah, it's more than simply not finding him attractive - I actually find him kind of repellent for some reason - possibly how reptilian he looks.

The lack of McCoy was just depressing.

Seriously!
