should have been myself

This morning,
dotfic and I went to see The Bourne Legacy, which I really enjoyed. I don't think seeing the earlier movies is necessary, though it probably makes some stuff easier to follow. Also, if you have a thing about animal harm or needles, there is both in this movie. I haven't read any reviews, but I thought Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz were really good and had fantastic chemistry. I mean, it was right there in the trailers, but it carries through the movie.

I could have done with more of her nursing him while he was viraling out and less of that final chase scene, which felt like it went on forever. Of course, I don't think I've ever seen a chase scene that I didn't think went on too long, so... I did love that she was the one who got rid of LARX-3 - she was in over her head and freaked out, but she was able to come through and be smart and dangerous when she needed to.

I loved that he went to her - I wish they'd built in a little more about his feelings for her, because that one flashback scene was nicely fraught and I wanted more - and how indignant he was that she only called him Number Five. I like how seriously compartmentalized she was - she kept saying, I did it for SCIENCE! and he's like, what did you think you were making here, lady?

I thought the government acronym soup stuff worked less well - not having watched the earlier movies in a while, I didn't remember which order things went in (Blackbriar! Treadstone!) but I hope Jason and Nicky are out there somewhere together. I don't know how it would play for someone with no knowledge of the earlier movies. Aaron Cross's quest is different from Jason Bourne's - he doesn't need to know who he is. He wants to stay who he's become. The reveal of his Flowers for Algernon situation was heartbreaking. And I can't imagine being in that position, and knowing what was awaiting you if you didn't get that final boost to lock the enhancements in.

Anyway, the pacing was sort of weird - it takes a while to get started and then just when you think it's firing on all cylinders, it ends. And there weren't even any smoochies. Which was kind of a disappointment. I loved his response to her when she wanted to get out of the car, and then how she saves him when the cops are coming and she's outside, and then the look on his face after he drops down into that alley to save her, and then offers her his hand again. Come with me if you want to live, indeed.

So that was enjoyable, and I expect fic at Yuletide.

Yesterday, I got tickets for Gaslight Anthem in November. I AM EXCITE! Of course, after I made the purchase, I checked my calendar, because the date sounded familiar, and of course, I have a Finance Committee meeting the next morning at 8:30 am. Sigh.

If you're interested in the answers to yesterday's DVD commentary meme, I did passages from 64 Colors, What a smile means, Angle of Incidence, Another Country, and Brush Up Your Shakespeare. The offer's still open.

Now, I think I need to see about dinner.
