the same city where I go when I sleep

Last night, I went to bed at 9pm. It was GLORIOUS. I also think I figured out 1. how to structure this story that has been sort of limping along in my head, and 2. what the title should be. Now I have to actually write it. Sigh.

I finished watching The Unusuals over the weekend and I really liked it. It's not that it was all that groundbreaking in terms of plots, because most of the time I knew exactly where the show was going and even how it was going to get there. No, what I liked about it was that it wasn't about the crimes, it was about the cops, which puts it firmly in HLotS territory, which is where I want my cop shows to live. I don't care about the random murder victims and I don't care about the process - I care about partners having car conversations about monkeys or playing pranks on each other or helping each other out in times of emotional distress (or mocking them during times of emotional distress, whichever). And this show delivered that.

I also really liked how even though I am the sort of person who would (and did) totally ship Walsh and Schraeger (because partners!), the show didn't. I mean, not even a little bit. Not at all. And it did not sexualize Schraeger at all either. No low cut blouses or ridiculously high heels. I wished she'd pulled her hair back more often, the way Beaumont did, but that's minor (and probably would have made her look even younger, which is probably why they didn't do it).

Jeremy Renner is quite good here, really believable as a veteran cop (I could have done without the manpainy backstory, but since that only came up once, I suppose I can forgive it) and I dug him being a former baseball player, too. I really liked that he took Schraeger seriously and had her back even when they first partnered up.

I can see why it didn't do well, though. Too quirky for the sake of being quirky, but at least when it failed, it mostly failed in interesting ways (where it didn't, I think, was in that first arc about Detective Cole's background. Every time that annoying guy said "Navan" I wanted to shoot myself. Or him. or my television. But once that was wrapped up, I was fine).

And yesterday, I read Bossypants by Tina Fey. It's cute and funny and a fast read. I'd recommend it for plane or beach reading.

This morning on the bus stop, the ad for Spider-man (which I am seeing this evening yay!) rotated away and I found myself staring at Sebastian Stan's pretty face. They are really going all out with the advertising for Political Animals. I really hope it's good.

Otoh, nothing I've read, and even heard from friends I trust, has made me want to sit down and watch Newsroom. Mostly, it has been an ever-growing refrain of OH AARON SORKIN NO. Sigh. We'll always have Sports Night (Dan Rydell is still high on my all-time favorite character list). And the first two seasons of West Wing.
