and let me know that you're mine

So last night, given that I had a headache and was unfit for doing anything thinky, I watched a couple of movies.

I thought The Nanny Diaries was mostly enjoyable for what it was - the fact that I live on the UES (though technically, I live in Yorkville, where the regular, non-rich people live) made it more amusing - but mostly it gave me lots of ( Read more... )

I'll say a few good things about FFII, but only very mildly.

Jessica Alba justifies her own existence no matter what she does, but I always thought she was a bad choice for Sue. I hate seeing her blond with blue contacts, she's so gorgeous in her own natural colors.

But the costume/makeup/effects design and hybrid performace of Doug Jones and Lawrence Fishburn as the Surfer were wonderful and the whole movie has the lightweight, goofy quality of the old, 1960s-era comic books, right down to Stan Lee not being allowed into Reed and Sue's wedding.

I'm glad the whole series is getting a complete reboot, and I'm looking forward to seeing a new FF that's a worthy addition to the Marvel Movieverse.

I did like how they handled Galactus - that seemed menacing without being goofy or showing too much.

And I agree about Jessica Alba in a blonde wig with blue contacts. She's just so gorgeous that it's a crime to cover her up.

Actually, in a movie this goofy, I think this shot would have played pretty well:

that awful Woody Allen movie about social climbing and tennisMatch Point! I actually love that film and think it's one of the best movies Woody Allen made in the last couple of decades. I love the unmitigated nastiness in it, and the fact the bastard gets away with it out of sheer dumb luck, because baby, them's the break sometimes. Johansson was quite fine in it, if I recall. She also was the title character in a very classy adaptation of "Girl with a Pearl Earring" with Colin Firth, which I recommend mostly because it is absolutely gorgeous to look at -- I don't know what the cinematographer did exactly, but the texture and colours in the film made the viewing experience akin to falling into one of Vermeer's paintings. Johansson was cast very well in it, I thought. She has one of those luminous period faces ( ... )

Yes! That's the one! I think it was well done but I just hated everyone in it and I also have Jonathan Rhys Myers issues. All the acting was good in it, iirc, I just didn't like any of the characters.

Otoh, I LOVED Lost in Translation, and I guess I've let her coast on that, because I thought she was wasted in IM2 aside from that awesome bit where she takes down the whole security crew while Happy is having a fist fight with that one guy.

But I liked her in Nanny Diaries and obviously thought Natasha was awesome in Avengers, so I'm absolutely willing to watch her in other stuff now.

I guess I do get it somewhat, because I'm not a big fan of Gwyneth Paltrow, though I've liked her in other things occasionally, but I LOVE HER as Pepper.

You are me re. Ms. Paltrow. She's a decent actress and gorgeous to look at, but "Shakespeare in Love" (a lovely bit of fluff) was wildly overpraised and her public persona is kind of annoying, so I tended to look at her projects with prejudgement. But Pepper! Man, I have so much love for Pepper like you wouldn't believe and I got so freakin' defensive about her whenever I came across people talking trash about her. She is utterly charming in the role and has ridiculous chemistry with RDJ. I hear he is the one who insisted on bringing Pepper back to The Avengers? WELL DONE, SIR.

Yeah, that's the part that gets me. but Pepper is just SO AMAZING.

*nod nod*

That's how I feel. HATERS STAY PRESSED. I WILL FIGHT YOU.

I hear he is the one who insisted on bringing Pepper back to The Avengers? WELL DONE, SIR.

Yeah, he had to convince both her and Joss, and I'm so, so glad he did.

Young, hella good looking, famous, and likes to talk about stuff like politics, sexism and the politics of sex. I promised to <3 her forever when she did an interview where she mentioned the importance of STD tests and condoms.

Didn't see FF2 because I didn't like FF1 because they did terrible things to my beloved Johnny Storm. I was very leery when I heard Chris Evans was going to be Captain America because of this.

They did make me like Reed Richards but that's because I am a scientist too so it's always science first ;)

I really liked her response to having her naked pictures leaked.

I don't get why people hate her so much

IIRC she has a habit of saying snotty things about her costars after the movie is over, (actors who have a reputation for being nice, not jerks), and comes across as a narcissist in interviews. At least she used to. She may have wised up by now.

I really haven't seen any interviews with her but the press she's done for Avengers and she seems pretty cool to me.

When she was younger (LIT period), she had a habit of making outrageously assholic comments in interviews.

She gave an interview to the NYT about, among other things, plastic surgery (as a preternaturally physically blessed early 20something) that amounted to "aging makes you so ugly, I'm going to start getting botox when I'm 25, bc when I see crow's feet I want to barf, and I don't understand why people don't either get lipo or KILL themselves, LOL" that was the complete antithesis of the seemingly smart and savvy comments she's been making post-Avengers.

Yes, she was young, but not everyone comes off as a *complete jackass* in their youth. So, that, and the befriend-older-men-and-bat-your-eyelashes-about-it persona she seems to have finally shed post-Sean Penn is a large chunk of what people hated about her for years. When she opened her mouth, she seemed toxic, even though she was pretty great onscreen.

Either she's had some kind of epiphany, or she's finally gotten good media training.

Or she's grown up.

I honestly never paid attention to her prior to her naked pics leaking and then Avengers, though I enjoyed some of her movies.

I have nothing against her personally though she did annoy me in The Other Boleyn Girl.

And for a while this was all I could think when I saw her:
