your spine was on fire all the way down

So there was a meme:

1. Comment on this post with I VOLUNTEER!
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ/DW.

renne gave me the letter K.

1. Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, Battlestar Galactica. My TV girlfriend now and forever. From her first moments onscreen ("punching a superior asshole." Hee!) to her peaceful but unsatisfactory ending, my heart belonged to her first and foremost on this show full of awesome women, and even when I didn't like the things she did - because boy howdy, could she fuck up - I loved her for being that messy and flawed and uncontainable. She was fierce and strong and so, so broken and the best damn viper pilot the Colonial fleet had ever seen and she is one of my forever favorites.

2. Kaylee Frye, Firefly. Sunshiney Kaylee, who wants to see the best in people and the best in the verse; who makes a home and family out of the crew of Serenity. She brings out the tenderness in Mal and Jayne and Zoe and Inara; she likes sex and isn't ashamed of it, and she likes girly frilly things and strawberries and engines all at the same time and nobody judges her for it (except maybe Mal, but he is a judgy asshole at the best of times and he loves Kaylee as much as she loves him; I actually ship Mal/Kaylee/(Serenity) pretty hard). Kaylee, who doesn't love violence and wants no part of it, but is still as kind as she can be to River, because she doesn't know any other way to be.

3. Katara of the Water Tribe, Avatar: The Last Airbender. "You can't knock me down!" ♥ This post does a good job laying out one of the things I love about Katara - how ANGRY she is. Women are not often allowed to be angry - not in fiction and certainly not in real life - but Katara is fueled by it; she channels it to become a better waterbender, to keep her family, her friends, her world safe. Sometimes it gets out of hand - how shocking was it when she used bloodbending on that guy who wasn't Yon Rha? When even Zuko looks shocked, you know it's something really bad! - but she also uses it to be a creative fighter - barely trained, she stood her own against Master Pakku because she was so angry at being sent to learn healing with the girls - not that she doesn't find healing a useful application of waterbending, and she becomes good at that as well, but Katara is a fighter first and foremost. (I would have put Korra but I don't know her well enough yet. But soon, I hope!)

4. Kate "Hawkeye" Bishop, Young Avengers. When I first met Kate, my reaction was WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE? No, seriously. She is the badass normal of the Young Avengers, and without her, they wouldn't survive. She's another young woman with a fierce will to fight and survive, and the desire to make the world a better place (and the means to do so) and she whips the boys into shape with her drive and ambition. Also, she plays the cello and looks fierce in purple.

5. Kay Howard, Homicide: Life on the Street. Oh, Kay, the show done you wrong in later seasons, and the fandom never seems to appreciate you as much as you deserve, in the shadow of Frank and Tim and Lewis and Kellerman, but you were the best of them, in many ways, because you had to work harder and longer and better (all while saddled with Felton, who never deserved you but was smart enough to know that, at least) than the rest of them so you wouldn't be dismissed as a secretary with a gun. I loved that you commanded respect from even the most persnickety of your squadmates *cough*Frank*cough* and that the showrunners understood, after the first couple of episodes, that you didn't need to be softened up with makeup and skirts, that you could do the job with the best of the boys without having anything to prove about how much of a woman you were.

This was hard - I couldn't decide between Kate Kane and Kate Spencer, and so chose neither, though I thought of doing an All Kate edition also featuring Kate Beckett and Kate Lockley, or an all law enforcement edition with Kima Greggs, and I felt bad about not including Karen Starr or Kara Zor-El or Koriand'r or Katniss or Kono or Kalinda, and of course, since I went with all ladies, I couldn't include Kellerman, or Kon, either, though he is one of my most favorite things about the pre-reboot DCU. ♥KON♥

Wow, I was afraid at first I wouldn't have five characters, but look at that. Five and more. *g*

I got my highlights done yesterday and since she did it in parts, and possibly left some of it develop a little longer than it should have, my highlights are much blonder than they usually are at this point (usually they are either a scary red that mellows into gold or a bright caramel that mellows into gold - I don't know why all my highlights always end up blonde, given how dark my hair is, but they always have). I like it, though the smell is killing me.

Today's poem:

you are ohio

so I had this dream we
were a map of the midwest.
you were ohio & I was
michigan & I was all over
you & it was so fucking hot
your spine was on fire all
the way down to cincinnati,
& god damn if that ain't
the most depressing thing
because I knew I'd wake
up wishing I was kentucky
& your ankles were a river
wrapped around my throat,
but it don't matter either way
because motherfuck if you aren't
always telling me the same thing-
it's not happening, uh-uh,
not in this time zone, brother,
or any other place.
