you might see anyone in town

Aug 29, 2011 14:02

You know, I could totally get used to strolling into work at 10:45. I got to sleep until I woke up (8:15 am), prior to my alarm (8:25), and I feel good and well-rested and, well, I won't say ready to work, but capable of working. (Boss 2 has actually told me if I wanted to change my hours to 10-6, he would be okay with that, but while I think it would be great in the summer, I think getting home at 7pm in the winter would just make me sad, so I said no. Also, I like getting here a little before Boss 1, who generally walks in around 9:15; it makes me feel like I am prepared, rather than walking in and getting grabbed while I'm taking my coat off and getting settled.)

Anyway, there was some slowness on the C, but I had a seat and my iPad, so it was fine.

Speaking of which, OMG ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN. In a weird coincidence, on Saturday night, I hit the issues where Magneto causes a giant tidal wave to wipe out Manhattan, so I was a little o.O about reading that during the hurricane, but last night, I soldiered on, and I cried really hard when J. Jonah Jameson had his epiphany about how badly he'd treated Spidey and wrote that lovely tribute to him. All I want is for him to get some validation! And he's got it, and he's right, it is weird. And then Johnny Storm and Bobby Drake move into the Parker house, and since I already ship them all, I have hearts in my eyes, even though Ultimate Bobby Drake so far seems like kind of a tool, which makes me sad, but seems to be par for the course for Ultimates, where almost everybody is kind of a tool at best. (PS:
nekare, you were right, Peter does date Kitty Pryde, but it doesn't happen until, like, issue 100.) Also, I guess that one girl becomes Firestar, even though she's not Angelica Jones. (Spider-Man/Iceman/Firestar was my very first OT3.) Also, I really like the clone-girl Spider-Girl. I hope nothing bad happens to her.

So this is all making me very happy even while it's making me sad. I thought knowing that Peter dies in the end would make it easier to bear, but it really doesn't. I just cry a lot every time he talks about going to college or growing up because I know he doesn't get to do those things. I have ALL the sad about Ultimate Peter Parker, but in a good way, I guess.

Speaking of having all the sad, my niece was complaining about how sad the Captain America movie was, and I tried to explain to her that it was okay, because Bucky is also still alive in the comics and will probably show up again in the movies (Sebastian Stan is signed for six movies and also the director has said he's interested in the Winter Soldier storyline, so who knows?), but after explaining how that happened (even in brief it was very twisty), I ended with, "but Bucky's dead again apparently" (which, he better come back, is all I'm saying about that, because why would you do all the work to bring back a character who was famous mostly for staying dead when everybody else gets revived and then kill him off again? it makes no sense and is a waste of narrative potential and also ♥BUCKY♥), and she was like, "Comics are so weird." and I was like, "You said a mouthful, sister."

In the meantime, I just want ALL the Steve/Bucky fic. And some Bucky/Natasha. I know I've said this before, but it bears repeating, mostly because I keep hoping some of you will write it for me.

Meanwhile, everything I try to write these days wants to be plotty and that is annoying. I just want people to have sex and avoid talking about their emotions! This shouldn't be that hard! In a manner of speaking.

Anyway, another two days on the 30 days of fanfic meme:

Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
Day 4
Day 5
Day 6

Day 7
Day 8

Day 9
Day 10

Day 11 - Genre - do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

I think innie_darling said it best when she said I write stories about actual emotions being felt by dumbasses who feel the need to cover them up with banter and/or sex. Is that a genre?

I'm most comfortable writing either romantic comedies or melancholy vignettes where not a lot happens. I did write a fair few casefiles in SPN, which I enjoyed doing, even though they make me bang my head against the keyboard in frustration, and I end up writing around the case a lot, because constructing an actual interesting and suspenseful mystery seems to be beyond me.

According to my delicious, I have actually written nearly the same amount of het (324), gen (317) and m/m slash (319), so I guess I feel comfortable in all of those genres. I'd like to write more ladyslash.

Day 12 - Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

Numerous times, though mostly back when I was in XMM - I did Casablanca, the Princess Bride, and an episode of Homicide.

I wrote a MWPP+Lily version of the Buffy episode Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. that was a lot of fun.

I have an abandoned WIP where Sirius Black was Batman (or, well, the Grim aka The Black Knight) that now that I have actually read a bunch of Batman comics makes me kind of want to pick it up again and finish it.

Oh, and I've written a version of Tamlane for numerous fandoms.

I enjoy those kinds of pastiches - they're fun, though I find that sometimes, as with remixes, people hew a little too closely to the original so they don't quite work as well as they should, because it's rare that characters map exactly onto other characters, and the relationship dynamics need to be taken into account.

13 - Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

14 - Ratings - how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?

15 - Warnings - What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a story?

16 - Summaries - Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

17 - Titles - Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the story? Also, if you do chaptered story, do you give each chapter a title, or not?

18 - Where do you get the most inspiration for your stories (aka "bunnies") from?

19 - When you have bunnies ideas, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

20 - Do you ever get bunnied inspired from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?

21 - Sequels - Have you ever written a sequel to a story you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

22 - Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

23 - When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

24 - Betaing - How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your story? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

25 - Music - Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your story? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

26 - What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a story?

27 - Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

28 - Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your story?

29 - What is your current project or projects?

30 - Do you have a favorite story you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!
