the bus, the bus, the bus is on fire

After staying up late last night to write (and then getting out of bed to make a correction after I'd posted *facepalm*), I hit "off" instead of "snooze" on my alarm this morning, and didn't wake up again until about 8:55. Which is normally when I am strolling into the office. Oops?

Then, as I was riding the bus, the engine started to smoke in great billowing, awful-smelling plumes, so we all had to get off. Luckily, it was my stop anyway, but still! The bus was (nearly) on fire!

When I was a sophomore in high school, our fiercest rival set fire to one of the football team's buses in what was, I believe, the culmination of an escalating prank war. "The bus, the bus, the bus is on fire, we don't need no water, let the motherfucker burn" became kind of an unofficial theme song that year.

Anyway, this is going to be one of those stories where I start out with the most exciting version: "The bus was on fire!" and then have to walk it back to, no, the engine was smoking pretty hard so we all got dumped off. Like the story that starts, "I got hit with a chair in a bar fight!" But what really happened was a drunk girl shoved her chair into me and then wanted to throw down when I complained about 1. having a chair shoved into my back and 2. that she didn't apologize for it. When she didn't calm down, I hid in the ladies room until she left. *hands*

There's the truth and then there's the story. Sometimes one needs a little embellishment to become the other.

Anyway, yes, I posted a story last night. New fandoms are scary and hard.

Find a map and draw a straight line
Captain America (movieverse); Steve/Bucky; pg; 1,320 words
Bucky knows him better than anyone, but Steve's pretty sure he doesn't know about this.

Or on AO3 if you prefer.

I'm still feeling my way into the characters, and I wish my knowledge of 1940s slang was better, but I can work on those things, so I'm actually pretty okay with it. I just wish I didn't have to give up sleep to write.
