I can't believe Cameron Crowe is doing a 20th anniversary documentary retrospective on Pearl Jam. I feel really old now.
Apologies if I've told you this story before, but in early 1992 my then-supervisor (of RA's in the dorms), said to us, "There's a great band playing at the R&R Station on Thursday, does anyone want to go?"
(Side note: She had seen REM play in 1981 at the campus Stock Pavilion, when there were 100 people in the audience. So we were used to her knowing what was going on indie-musically. Also, "Stock Pavilion" is not a music venue so much as it is the barn where the University keeps its herd of dairy cattle.)
Anyway, I was all, "Oh, I can't really afford it right now, and I have an exam the next day." R said, "Are you sure? They're really good, it's a band called Pearl Jam."
I skipped the show, and the next day (after my stupid exam) I got to hear a bunch of people talking about how great the show was, and how they got to meet the lead singer, meow meow meow. And six months later they were, y'know, Pearl Jam. I'm still kicking myself.
No, I don't believe you ever did tell me that story. Oh man, I would so be kicking myself after that. I've seen them twice (or is it three times? no, I think twice is correct) and they were excellent both times, but neither was until after they were famous.
