Last night, I acquired and watched Under the Red Hood. I enjoyed it, though some of the writing was laughably bad. I think
tripoli's
overview post was very helpful - it gave background and texture to some things that get mentioned - but I also think that the movie pretty much gives you what you need to know, if, like me, you're basically familiar with the Batman canon via the various movies and the Adam West TV show, and via fannish osmosis. I thought Jensen did a fine job (and it was SO NICE to hear him do something other than that stupid gravelly voice), and if you're a Supernatural fan, it does lend an extra bit of resonance to some of the stuff he says, hearing it in Dean's voice.
tripoli is right - Jason would make an excellent Winchester.
When he forgives Batman for letting him die, but not for not avenging his death, it definitely rang that bell, even though Dean is not nearly as vengeance-focused as Sam or John. It was kind of heartbreaking, which was also probably more due to that association for me than for any real investment I had in Jason qua Jason, though I did feel really bad for the kid. (I mostly wanted to beat Batman about the head with a two-by-four, which I think is par for the course with Batman. I mean, I felt bad for him, too, and for Alfred [not enough Alfred! Not enough Dick, either *cough*], but mostly I felt bad for Jason.)
I was glad to see their first meeting where Jason is stealing the tires off the Batmobile - as someone who doesn't know all the background details, that seems the most important for this particular story.
The Joker was creepy and gross, as he should be, but he's mostly a plot device here.
Also, and I don't know if this is a function of Neil Patrick Harris or Dick Grayson, but, uh, I kinda came out of the movie shipping Dick/Jason, even though
they don't actually interact beyond a little fighting. It's just that Dick is all, "This guy's got moves" in an admiring and almost flirty voice whenever they're fighting Red Hood. And also, it's Dick Grayson - he basically pairs with anyone. I'm not even in DCU fandom and I know that. *snerk* *facepalm*
I thought the Black Mask was hilarious, and I liked his unflappable assistant (I'm guessing she was Ms. Li, as she was the only woman in the movie, sadly [someone who might have been Talia had a brief cameo in a scene with Ra's al Ghul, who, btw, is voiced by Jason Isaacs, for any Lucius fans hanging around]), she had the long-suffering, eye-rolling assistant thing going on. She, Nightwing, and Alfred seemed like the only people in the movie who had any sense, which I appreciate.
Anyway. I think if, like me, you're a casual Batman fan who likes Jensen Ackles, you could do way worse than watching this movie. I enjoyed it.

It may not look like it at the moment, but I would still say Supernatural. I mean, in terms of fannish activity, my writing brain is still mostly consumed with Sam and Dean, and they're who I most want to read about. I'm certainly apprehensive about season 6, and in terms of what show I'm actually looking most forward to watching next season in real time, possibly the answer to that is Fringe, but SPN still has a grip on my heart that I'm finding difficult to get free of. I mean, I do read fic in other fandoms and enjoy it, but I still really want the casefiley Sam and Dean (or Sam/Dean) stories that are like the show except without a lot of the fail, and in which they eat pie and trade insults as endearments and maybe there is neck touching and/or shoulder bumping, if not outright hugging. Why people don't write more of these stories is beyond me. Sigh. Fandom, why do you not do my bidding?

I made
rosemary whole wheat focaccia today. I personally think it would be better with white flour, but it's pretty good with the whole wheat, and it smells divine. We had it for lunch. Very tasty.
