he rolls over this changeup

Last night, I had a spur of the moment dinner with marksykins and mousapelli at Bubby's. There was really good cheese macaroni, and there was super tasty key lime pie. Mmm...pie... Also, fangirls who are awesome and who I hadn't seen in far too long! So that was good.

Then I went home and highlighted my hair.

Today I was all set to leave work at 2:30, as we do on summer Fridays, and my boss emailed me this 310 page document she needed printed, and of course, the printer acted up and wouldn't do it all at once, so it took me half an hour to get the whole thing printed in little batches, so I didn't catch the train I'd hoped. But now I am at the parents' for Father's Day weekend, and on Monday I leave for sunny Florida for my vacation. woo!

Day 10 - A show you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving

Man, there are a lot of answers to this question. I was reluctant to try both Veronica Mars and Friday Night Lights because I've reached a point where shows about teenagers just don't do it for me, and I ended up loving both of them (well, VMars's first stellar season, anyway; after that, um...yeah).

But the real answer to this has to be Supernatural. I remember the advertising "watch it in the dark! Scary just got sexy!" and I was like, really? Seriously? Dean Forester and some other guy are in a horror show? After Gilmore Girls? I'll stick with Veronica Mars, thanks.

I don't like horror and by that point in Gilmore Girls, I didn't like Dean anymore, and I already had a show on at that time that I was watching. So I didn't watch Supernatural. Gushing posts about it started showing up on my flist. People started talking about something called "Wincest" (but since it wasn't older brother/younger sister, even that wasn't enough to catch my interest). I was busy with my reunion with Firefly, and uninterested. angelgazing kept trying to sell me on it. "Road trips! Guns! Pie! Brothers! Banter!" she said, but I was unmoved.

And then the season 1 finale happened, and there were all these OMGWTFBBQ!? posts on my flist, so I had to know what happened so I clicked on a bunch of the cut-tags and I was like, "wow, that's a pretty bold move for a show that doesn't know it's coming back." But I still didn't care.

And then over that summer, Pandarus started posting this Faith/Dean crossover, and Faith is totally my little black dress of fandom - I will read lots and lots of things I wouldn't normally read if she's in them - and it was a lot of fun, even if I didn't know who these Sam and Dean guys actually were. And I thought maybe I should take the time to find out, but it wasn't a priority or anything.

And then, luzdeestrellas went on vacation, and angelgazing disappeared from the internet, and I was left all by my lonesome, and I was bored over a four day weekend and felt the need for a new show to watch. So I said to my flist, "Hey, flist, hook me up with this Studio 60 pilot I hear is so awesome, and while you're at it, tell me where I can get some of this Supernatural thing everyone's talking about."

I watched the Studio 60 pilot and liked it. And then I watched the Supernatural pilot, and Dean said, "I can't do this alone," and Sam said, "Yeah, you can." And Dean said, "Well, I don't want to." And I said, "Dean, you must tell me more!"

And then I proceeded to watch all of the first season over the course of, like, five days at the end of July/beginning of August 2006. And despite laughing at some of the hilariously clunky exposition ("We were raised like WARRIORS, Dean!" will never not have a special place in my heart), I really fell for Dean and for his relationship with his brother, and his taste in music, and his car. (I didn't fall for Sam until "Devil's Trap." Before that I mostly wanted him to stop his whiny whiny whining. Oh, Sam. You had a slow start, but you grew up AWESOME.)

I got a Dean icon from amberlynne. I laughed when, after watching "Something Wicked," I made a post that said nothing but "Oh, Dean" and got, like 30 comments. I swore I wasn't going to write fanfic. And then, um, I wrote a crossover where Sam and Connor hook up at Stanford. And then I wrote a Dean/Mixtape story, and then I apparently wrote, like, 200 more SPN stories, and I still have a bunch of wsip in the hopper. It'll be four years in August that I've been in this fandom, which is technically the longest I've been active in a fandom. For whatever that's worth.

But you know, it totally wasn't a show I was interested in, and wouldn't like even if I bothered to watch it. I thought it was a good summer fling while I was waiting for Studio 60 to come and knock my socks off in September. Ha!

My relationship with the canon is a lot more complicated now, but I do love those Winchester boys something fierce.
