i drink to health while you kill yourself

My mother woke me early to bake the orange-ricotta poundcake for her and my father. I did a whole lot of fic-reading instead of any of the other things I was supposed to do, and then when I got home, I went to the grocery store, picked up a 4 lb pork butt, and attempted to make pulled pork in my Dutch oven. The plan here was to see if it worked and produced something I could eat for lunch for most of the week, instead of relying on Boar's Head for my lunch meat.

I used soy sauce instead of Worcestershire, so it doesn't have that same flavor, and next time I think I would go for something more barbecue-y, but in principle, I would have to say it worked.

I myself often end up avoiding meat for long periods of time because of something or other that squicks me about it (no lie, I didn't eat beef for about six weeks after reading "My Year of Meats," and a gristly bit of chicken can put me off for weeks, as well, and I like meat), so I'm putting the pictures (there are only two) under a cut.

Since the naked pork butt was a little disturbing to look at, here it is bathed in soy sauce and crusted in brown sugar:

Also, the term "pork butt" never stops amusing me. I really do have the sense of humor of a 7 year old sometimes.

And here it is after 4.5 hours of cooking and then being pulled apart:

I used two forks to pull the meat off the bone and then into smaller pieces and that worked perfectly well. It tastes pretty good, too, though like I said, I might go with something more bbq-y next time, or maybe I could add pineapple or orange juice to this to make it more sweet-n-sour-ish. I'm really not looking forward to cleaning that pot (right now, I'm just keeping the meat in there), but overall, I guess it was a success.

Here's to more interesting lunches. *g*
