The show's meta on fans was fun for a while, until this episode, and then the bubble burst. Enough already.

Demian and Barnes were adorable and I liked the positive portrayal of fans being brave and resourceful, and also that they were gay and didn't die. But the more I ponder it the more I'm uncomfortable with Becky's role vs. Demian and Barnes and how the show sort of...constructed itself a fictional fandom that is mostly male and I don't get why that was necessary.

Heh. Moonlighting got away with it. And then it imploded. So it sort of proves why that sort of breaking the fourth wall should be done sparingly, if at all. *G*

SPN does the sly self-awareness and shout-outs that the TV viewing audience exists but it's a different type of breaking down the fourth wall than direct addresses to the TV audience they had on Moonlighting. How Moonlighting pulled that off for several seasons without making me feel Maddie and David were mere constructs, I have no idea, but they did. Here, this ep of SPN made me aware of Sam and Dean as constructs and made me believe less in them as characters to care for.
