So when I moved into my own apartment in 1994, I didn't buy a hand mixer (or a stand mixer, though lord knows, I've coveted a shiny cobalt blue KitchenAid since I discovered they made them in cobalt blue, which they might not even do anymore), because I lived around the corner from my parents and did most of my baking at their house, with their industrial strength KitchenAid.
When I moved into this apartment, I had already stopped cooking for myself regularly (holiday baking was, once again, done at the parents', because they have the space, the equipment, and also it means I don't have to schlep delicate food items on the train), and the tiny galley kitchen didn't do anything to encourage me to start again. No, it took being laid off to do that.
So I've been cooking dinner regularly, and also making banana bread regularly so I have something to take to work for breakfast every day. But the banana bread recipe I use doesn't require a mixer - I mush the bananas with a fork and mix the rest by hand with a wooden spoon. But yesterday instead of the 4-5 bananas I usually buy for the banana bread, I ended up with 8 bananas (for $2), and I was looking at recipes for banana cake. Which would require creaming the butter and sugar, and I was like, I will make that! Except I totally don't want to spend the time doing that by hand, because, uh, no.
So with the gift certificates I had left from my birthday, I just purchased a swanky
KitchenAid 9-speed hand mixer. (I imagine it comes in colors, but I went with white.) And the
dough hook attachments (though the likelihood that I will ever make something that requires them is...slim to none). I had exactly the right amount of gift certificate swag that I could also have it delivered on Tuesday, while I'm home, and not technically have to pay for it.
Of course, now I'm like, I really hope there's room for another plug in the outlet over the sink! But I can always unplug the microwave if I have to. I have no idea where I'm going to put it when it's not in use, but I'll figure something out. So hopefully it will arrive early on Tuesday, and I can make banana cake in addition to banana bread. And, to justify the cost (even though it's technically a gift), I will probably do some baking this fall. I'll keep you updated if that should happen.
