it's not going to stop

I am slowly catching up on comments, so go me!

Hey, so today I read a casting spoiler for S5 of Criminal Minds. Apparently they have cast (are casting?) an ER doctor for the season opener, so Hotch at least isn't DOA, according to Ausiello. And there was nothing about Thomas Gibson leaving the show, at least not that I've read yet, so yay for that. Hotch!

One of the things I really like about CM, despite how creepy and depressing it can be, is how even though it's often a parade of victimized pretty young women (though certainly men and kids and old people come in for their share of horrifying violence; also in the episode I just watched, it hung a lantern on the fact - JJ chooses the cases, and she often chooses cases that have some resonance for her personally, whether consciously or not), it never blames the women (kids/men/etc.) for what happens to them, and also, quite often they fight back in unexpected, and occasionally unexpectedly successful ways. I'm thinking of the junkie chick in that episode with the broken glass all over the floor, or the women in the episode I just watched. The way it tries to show the good in people in addition to the horror some people are capable of (and even then, sometimes it makes me feel bad for the unsub - Frankie Muniz, Anton Yelchin, and Alex O'Loughlin come to mind on this one - I even felt kind of bad for Dawson once I got over the shock of him actually being able to act).

Yes, quite often our heroes rescue the victims (or don't rescue them and they die horribly, which is another thing I like about the show - they are not always in time, and they are not always infallible), but sometimes, they rescue themselves, keep themselves or their family members alive.

It's that quality, along with the awesome team dynamics (and how the women are strong, contributing, equal members of the team and not damsels in distress who need rescuing every week), that have made me really like the show, I guess. I don't think I'm particularly fannish about it - though Penelope Garcia is one of the best fannish avatars I've ever seen in media - but it really is satisfying to me in a way a lot of other procedurals are not.

And speaking of CM, apparently this week's fannish5 is Name your five favorite geniuses - evil or otherwise - from any fandom.

In no particular order:

1. Charles Wallace Murry
2. River Tam
3. Spencer Reid
4. Tony Stark
5. Hank McCoy

I'm sure there's a ton I'm not thinking of, and which you'll remind me of.

In other news, I haven't started my rewatch of The Wire yet, but
cesperanza linked to this fantastic vid by falafel_musings, which is a tribute to the corner boys of S4 and the people who tried to mentor them. Exceptionally heartbreaking (and also hella spoily, so if you haven't seen the end of s4, don't watch). The Bubbles-and-Sherrod stuff especially broke me, and of course, Michael. S3 remains my favorite overall, but I think s4 is probably the hardest, most heartbreaking season of the show. (I still want a Stringer Bell vid to "The Jackal." And surely there must be some awesome Omar vids out there, right? Right?)
