[admin] warnings policy

Jun 29, 2009 00:10

I've put up warnings on a few old XMM stories that needed them, but if you ever read anything of mine that contains on-screen sexual violence, non-con or dub-con and it's not warned for, let me know. And if there's something else that you think should be warned for, let me know that too ( Read more... )

>>if I could ban the use of the words "lover" and "lovers" from fanfic, I would.<<

oh god yes, SO MUCH yes. the only time it doesn't make me want to smack the author with a thesaurus is in historical fic, and even then it sometimes makes me twitch.

Yeah, historical fic I think a case can be made for, or possibly if you are talking about Inara and her clients? Maybe? (in an arch or ironic way?), but most of the characters I read and write about, no. I can't see them managing it with a straight face. And especially not in narration! Arrgh!

i don't even think i'd accept it for/from inara, just because her relationships with her clients all kind of boil down to business transactions, even with people she has genuine personal affection for.

i see it in contemporary original fic too and it pushes me right out of the story.

True. I could see maybe Kaylee using it about Inara's clients, or possibly Mal if he were being mean.

Me, too.

Otoh, someone over on DW just commented how she uses it in both RL and fic, and doesn't see an issue, so it's probably a matter of taste.

I'd still ban it if I could, though. Along with most epithets.

I think it's because when I started it was mostly on multi-fandom places that I warn for het or either flavour of slash.

One of my friends is from the Southwest of England and greets everyone with 'how are you my lover', so that's all I ever think of when I read it, so I have to agree.

I've spent a lot of time in multi-fannish spaces and have never felt the need, except on occasion as a joke (this story contains OMG BOYSEX! back when there was that big to-do about using MPAA ratings, for example). I feel that 1. the pairing tells you that (if you are familiar with the fandom, and if you're not, well, that's not my problem), and 2. I feel that these are not things that need to be warned for.

*nod nod*

As a joke between friends, sure. But for the most part, it is not something I imagine most characters I read and write about being able to say with a straight face.

That's a very sensible warnings policy.

In other news, if I could ban the use of the words "lover" and "lovers" from fanfic, I would.

Oh dear lord, yes. Please.

Thank you! I spent a little time writing it up and hoping it made sense.

It's just so ridiculous! It makes me laugh and completely jars me out of the story.

I'm with you as long as we get generational exceptions (I think movieverse Charles Xavier, for instance, is perfectly capable of using the words "my lover" unironically, even though it always makes me want to say "oh, honey, we have left the 1970s.")

Yeah, I think there could be some exceptions - the Middleman, Xavier, Benton Fraser - people who are more formal or old-fashioned; and of course, in historical fandoms it's probably more acceptable.
