Aww!They tie her to the stake, try to burn her for a witch, and she knows she's awake because her hands are bound, but Simon can move, can run and be safe.

He doesn't, though. Instead, he climbs up beside her and puts his arms around her, tighter than any knots the hill folk can tie.

She understands, then, that some restraints are invisible, and he's no freer than she is.

Thank you! And I am planning a rewatch of the whole series - it's been too long since I've seen it.

awesome! i haven't read any Firefly fic in ages, and after this i want to go back and watch it all. my favourite bit was this:

They tie her to the stake, try to burn her for a witch, and she knows she's awake because her hands are bound, but Simon can move, can run and be safe.

He doesn't, though. Instead, he climbs up beside her and puts his arms around her, tighter than any knots the hill folk can tie.

She understands, then, that some restraints are invisible, and he's no freer than she is.

Thanks so much! And that's such a seminal Simon moment, isn't it? Where you realize that for all his unhappiness at being a fugitive, he really would do anything for River. Sigh.

Jesus! If Joss could read this, he would smile happily at being seen even as his mourning for Firefly burned back into a white-hot flame in his heart.

This is spot-on perfect. River is so hard to capture.

Thank you! And yeah, she's not the easiest person to write, but somehow she feels comfortable to me.
