death is no parenthesis

Since sleeping is apparently not happening tonight, I got up around an hour ago and finished reading The Book Thief. I cried and hugged the book to my chest. Then I got out of bed to make this post, because sleep is apparently still not happening.

The short version is this: Read this book. The ending is completely inevitable (the narrator spoils ( Read more... )

See, I am already fond of anthropomorphic representations of Death, so that was a plus in my book right from the start.

I also liked the focus on regular people, who have flaws and are mostly just trying to get by and through the war as best they can.

Oh god, that book. That book is amazing. I made the mistake of reading the end on the Metro and was just in tears for the entire ride. The very concerned lady next to me on the train ended up handing me a pamphlet for her church and told me "It's going to be alright."

Yeah, I was glad I wasn't in public, because I was pretty wrecked.

THIS BOOK! This book is just...I love it. I love it really, really hard. I totally lost it in the last chapter, too.

I am a Book Thief evangelist, so I'm so glad you liked it! I went to see Markus Zusak talk about the book a while ago, and he said 1) that Rudy was his favourite character, which didn't surprise me at all, and 2) that he realised how much the book meant to him when he burst into tears in the middle of a public reading. :) You have to love a writer who puts that much of his heart into a story.

I was actually quite grateful for Death's warnings about what was going to happen. I don't think I could have taken it if it had come as a complete shock - it's bad enough as it is. But the reunion with Max was so important, somehow.

Rudy was love! I did like Liesel a lot, though, which definitely helped.

It really was necessary. The whole thing was just amazingly heartbreaking.
