It was awesome. I am so happy that finally got explained.

I mean, part of it is we're only getting outside points of view on him - we see him as Dean does, as Mary does, as Grandpa Samuel does, and I think that he's showing them what he wants them to see.

YES. Sorry to randomly pop up in your journal, but I was just thinking about this, and how we can fit this John in with the ex-Marine John we know, and I think you're exactly right. We barely see John at all; we mainly see other people's perceptions of John, and I think that it's both that he's showing them what he wants them to see and that they're reading into him what they want to see. Dean's looking at the differences between this John and his father as he knew him; Mary wants safety and normalcy; Grandpa Samuel's looking at the guy who's not good enough for his little girl.

I'm not sure that we really learned anything about John in this episode except that he loved Mary enough to consider buying a Volkswagen bus for her, and we kinda knew that already!

Right. Exactly.

Dean really is the only one in the family (that we know of, Grandma Deanna may have been honest too) that always is a straight shooter with the truth. He truly just can't keep things from the people he loves -- it could also be a side effect of John probably always wanting to know what was up, even if he himself raised them on a 'need to know basis ( ... )

P.S. (yep making it longer)

I love that Dean and Sam are named for Mary's parents. My middle name is my mom's sister who died before I was born, the only reason it wasn't my first name is that my mom was afraid that my grandfather couldn't handle it because he was still really grieving the loss of his daughter.

Though one thing I expect Dean never to be honest about is that he was named after Grandma, he doesn't need Sam hitting him back with a Deanna when calls him Samantha. LOL.

Yeah, I can't imagine he'd want to hear Sam teasing him with Deanna, but maybe he'd tell it, just because it's information neither of them knew before.

Yeah I kind of want to shake Mary too. I also can't help thinking of AUs where either she didn't die that night and told John the truth and went back to hunter mode to protect Sam.

I think that would be an awesome AU.

Also when I read minimal spoilers on this episode they always said that John was 2 years older than Mary -- and I kept rolling my eyes since their tombstones always made them same age.

Yeah, sometimes I think they just don't think too carefully about stuff, even though they are so precise with other stuff (the date Mary made her deal being Sam's birthday ten years later, etc.).

Yeah, I just want Dean to have lots of people in his life who love him. I mean, Sam, too, but Dean especially, because it seems like he hasn't really had it, and he's only recently been able to accept it from Sam.

I've read AUs where Mary and John both survive and hunt together, though written before 4.03.

So have I, but I want them building on this backstory now.
