i knew you'd always, always want more

So I am on vacation, and the plan is to bake cookies, finish off the Christmas shopping, and write. Like Malcolm Reynolds, what I plan and what takes place ain't ever exactly been similar, but after all manner of unseemly shenanigans earlier, I am planning to take a shower and get to cookie-making.

But first I wanted to do that meme, with the songs, like slodwick and amberlynne did, except I don't remember how exactly it was supposed to go, so I am just making it up now. Here are a bunch of songs that I would really like to write stories inspired by, but haven't managed it yet.

There are many, many stories to tell in Secretariat by Jeffrey Foucault - I had it on repeat while writing Atlanta Never Looked the Same, and obviously snagged the title from it - but this line: Love is patient, love is kind, but let's be honest / Love is a catalogue of deadly sins is a Wincest story waiting to happen. I just haven't figured it out yet. And this verse: I need a woman with a chin like Joe Frazier / To stand inside when I am swinging at the wind / Let's you and me take the gloves off darlin' / I'll tell you exactly where I've been is some kind of Sam/Jess/Dean AU.

Many, many Tom McRae songs make me think of Sam and Dean, but particularly these two at any given moment:
The Only Thing I Know (live): Ashes fall from your lips / And I’m counting the ways we counterfeit / And if I know your disguise, well it used to be mine / I’ll carry you through this burning land / And when the water’s gone / We’ll drink the sand / You know I’ve got nothing left / For the journey home / And I’ve run out of gods to burn / So this fever will return / For you
The first time fleurdeleo and I heard him do this in concert, she leaned over and said to me, "You're thinking about Sam and Dean, aren't you?" and I was like, "See! It's that obvious!"

Bloodless: We think that we're the ones / we're the bright unconquered suns / Wait a while we'll watch the light grow stale / And we smell so very clean but we're the / Oil in this machine and this machine / This machine is going wrong - I always hear it as "bright unconquered sons", which is a title I've wanted to use for a long time - originally for Alexander/Hephaistion or Achilles/Patroclus, but now for Sam and Dean.

Fugitive by the Indigo Girls, is, again, Sam and Dean: are they coming for us with cameras or guns / we don't know which but we gotta run / you say this is not what i bargained for / so hide yourself for me / all for me

(Fugitive Motel, otoh, is Sirius/Remus: I blow you a kiss / It should reach you tomorrow / As it flies from the other side of the world / From my room in my fugitive motel / Somewhere in the dust bowl / It flies from the other side of the world)

My Beautiful Defence by Thea Gilmore is another Sam/Dean song: And you looked so sad with all those ghosts on your tail / When they claw at your skin you’re all secrets and veils you say / It's dragging me under the riptide and I said / When the whole world comes down I’ll hold it up round your head. luzdeestrellas actually gave me that as a prompt a long time ago, and I still have it sitting in my wsip folder, waiting for the right story to show up.

Down to Nowhere by Thea Gilmore is a Kara Thrace song, and if I ever write a Kara story, it will probably be titled This is high-rise living for a joke like me. Or possibly A soldier of the vacuum when the darkness comes.

Silent Boulevard by Tom McRae is a Sirius Black song: No I'm not anybody's good son / Shoot the lights out all over this town / 'Til we're out on the silent boulevard / With our way lit only by stars - probably post-Hogwarts, pre-Azkaban. Sigh.

This is the Mal/Inara suite, for the very long and unhappy story I will never write of how they come together and fall apart:

The Shape I Found You In - Girlyman
I was calling to you / It was one thing I knew how to do / But my heart tried to cheat / Building safety nets under my feet / So if I fell I would fall right in / That's the shape you found me in

Once I Was Mighty - Martina Sorbara
I called all the local papers / Saying look what he did to me / Look what he said to me / Don't take this guy seriously / Still I find myself on my knees / Repenting relentlessly / For what he didn't find in me / For what I didn't turn out to be

Blue Caravan - Vienna Teng
oh, my blue, blue caravan / the highway is my great wall / for my true love is a man / who never existed at all / oh, he was a beautiful fiction / i invented to keep out the cold / but now, my blue, blue caravan / i can feel my heart growing old

There are more, but I think I will stop there. Obviously, I still have many, many stories to write. Sigh.

But it is time to shower and make cookie dough now.

If you enjoy any of these songs, please check the artists out and maybe purchase something by them.
