fic commentary: Alone I Fear the Tide (Supernatural; Sam and Dean)

Jun 11, 2007 14:10

You know how sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes, the bear eats you? I feel as if today, the bear ate me. I feel like I spent all my energy on my morning commute, just trying to get to work, and with that battle won (it was a Pyrrhic victory, I think), I just haven't got anything left for anything else ( Read more... )

Oh yay! I really love this story and i adore fic commentary - thanks so much for doing this!

The title comes from the song "Mermaid Blues" by Tom McRae,

I was wondering where you got your title from - you always choose such lovely, apt ones.

bring John's anger down on himself for Dean, something I imagine Dean did for him a lot when they were younger.

You know he did. If only to keep the peace but of course there are more reasons.

Is it wrong that my own story makes me say, "Oh, Dean"? I love this little moment more than I can say.

Nope! I love this moment too - i can just imagine how Dean feels, finding out that Sam hasn't told him about college and that he had to find out about it from some stranger? Cuts deeply.

Also, I have had a fondness for selkie stories since I was a kid--they're always so full of wistful yearning and sad happiness. Sigh.I loved that you used selkies; went perfectly with the story. I remember reading some version of the legend when i was younger and feeling so sad and wondering how those women could ( ... )

I'm so happy you enjoyed the commentary, and found it interesting.

I loved that you used selkies; went perfectly with the story. I remember reading some version of the legend when i was younger and feeling so sad and wondering how those women could leave their children like that. As a kid it broke my heart - i didn't want my mummy to leave me!

It really is a heartbreaking myth, and the whole thing about leaving and not being able to come back or choosing to come back etc. seemed so fitting for Sam and Dean, and the way they were relating to each other at the end of the first season.

I loved Nightshifter and Hollywood Babylon (besides the former being one of the 2 best episodes of the season and the latter for giving me JL!Dean - yes i am shallow) because it did show that Dean isn't the awkward people person that fandom has sort of exacerbated. He not always awkward, he can connect with people and get them to trust them. He wouldn't have been able to hunt on his own if he couldn't!Seriously. Dean doesn't have the same kind of "trust ( ... )

Seriously. Dean doesn't have the same kind of "trust me" face that Sam does, but he manages to connect with people who are scared and vulnerable in ways that Sam often doesn't (especially if he's not identifying with them).

Exactly. Rewatching season 1 just affirms this. Fandom seriously! Dean's not incompetent!

I ADORE the grin at the end of AHBL2. ADORE!

(though, of course, someone who jokes she has low standards. Oh, Dean...).

Dude...i...oh Dean!

Thanks again!

Yeah, I'm not sure where that comes from, but I wish it would go far, far away.

I ADORE the grin at the end of AHBL2. ADORE!

Hopefully with some of the weight lifted off his shoulders, he'll get his hunting mojo back.

Thanks again!

Heh. You're very welcome.

Enjoyed reading your commentary. :) At one point, you mention that you thought it was obvious the boys were dealing with selkies, but I'd never even heard of them before reading this story. I remember looking them up online afterward. :)

And also, regarding Subway? I was just griping about that place to my hubby the other day. The only sub I like from there is the meatball one, but the bread gets disgustingly soggy. Bleh.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed reading the commentary. And wow, I guess I just thought selkies were like mermaids, and everyone had heard of them. They never do mention the word in the story, which was deliberate.

I haven't eaten from there in years, but I used to walk by one, and it would smell so good - the bread all warm and yeasty - and then the sandwiches would just be awful.
