Sometimes we play a little game here called "You Should Totally Write That," wherein I tell lots of people what they could write to make me happy, and sometimes, they do.
Today, we're going to play a little variation on that game called, "You Should Totally Vid That," wherein I tell you all what vids I think should exist, and you... probably link me to where they live. Or get busy making the ones that haven't been made yet. *nods*
So. I've mentioned I'm not a huge fan of vids, I don't often *get* them and I certainly have no vocabulary for discussing them, and if I don't like the song, it generally doesn't matter how great the vid is technically (which I can see and appreciate, even if I don't understand it), I can't get over that, and if I do like the song but have my own mental story that goes with it, I am often resistant to the imposition of another narrative on the song that doesn't match or co-exist easily with mine (I also have problems with regular, professional music videos).
Which okay. yes. I have issues. I'm aware of that.
But I have three songs here that all suggest vids to me, and if they haven't already been done, my question is "why not? and when can you get started?" And if they have, then obviously, my question is, "Where?"
For You - Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
This is a quintessential Sam and Dean (or Sam/Dean, if you like) song (you just have to ignore the pronouns).
Princess cards she sends me with her regards
barroom eyes shine vacancy, to see her you gotta look hard
Wounded deep in battle, I stand stuffed like some soldier undaunted
To her Cheshire smile I'll stand on file, she's all I ever wanted.
But you let your blue walls get in the way of these facts
honey, get your carpetbaggers off my back
you wouldn't even give me time to cover my tracks.
You said, "Here's your mirror and your ball and jacks."
But they're not what I came for, and I'm sure you see that too
I came for you, for you, I came for you, but you did not need my urgency
I came for you, for you, I came for you, but your life was one long emergency
and your cloud line urges me, and my electric surges free
Crawl into my ambulance, your pulse is getting weak
reveal yourself all now to me, girl, while you've got the strength to speak
Cause they're waiting for you at Bellevue with their oxygen masks
But I could give it all to you now if only you could ask.
And don't call for your surgeon even he says it's too late
It's not your lungs this time, it's your heart that holds your fate
Don't give me money, honey, I don't want it back
you and your pony face and your union jack
would take your local joker and teach him how to act
I swear I was never that way even when I really cracked
Didn't you think I knew that you were born with the power of a locomotive
able to leap tall buildings in a single bound?
And your Chelsea suicide with no apparent motive
you could laugh and cry in a single sound.
And your strength is devastating in the face of all these odds
Remember how I kept you waiting when it was my turn to be the god?
You were not quite half so proud when I found you broken on the beach
Remember how I poured salt on your tongue and hung just out of reach
And the band they played the homecoming theme as I caressed your cheek
That ragged, jagged melody she still clings to me like a leech.
But that medal you wore on your chest always got in the way
like a little girl with a trophy so soft to buy her way
We were both hitchhikers, but you had your ear tuned to the roar
of some metal-tempered engine on an alien, distant shore
So you left to find a better reason than the one we were living for
and it's not that nursery mouth I came back for
It's not the way you're stretched out on the floor
'cause I've broken all your windows and I've rammed through all your doors
And who am I to ask you to lick my sores?
And you should know that's true...
I came for you, for you, I came for you, but you did not need my urgency
I came for you, for you, I came for you, but your life was one long emergency
and your cloud line urges me, and my electric surges free

Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones
Only The Greatest Rock Song of All Time. I've been vidding this in my head forever, probably far too influenced by Martin Scorsese, with lots of shots of helicopters and cops in riot gear and guns and violence and stuff - back in the day I thought it'd make an awesome HLotS vid, but now of course, I think it'd be an awesome SPN vid.
Oh, a storm is threatening
My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Ooh, see the fire is sweepin'
Our very street today
Burns like a red coal carpet
Mad bull lost your way
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
The floods is threat'ning
My very life today
Gimme, gimme shelter
Or I'm gonna fade away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
I tell you love, sister, it's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
Kiss away, kiss away

And the third is one that I've been vidding in my head since I saw Serenity
Live to Tell - Madonna
Because this is to me the quintessential Serenity theme song from River's POV.
I have a tale to tell
Sometimes it gets so hard to hide it well
I was not ready for the fall
Too blind to see the writing on the wall
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, till then
It will burn inside of me
I know where beauty lives
I've seen it once, I know the warmth she gives
The light that you could never see
It shines inside, you can't take that from me
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, till then
It will burn inside of me
The truth is never far behind
You kept it hidden well
If I live to tell
The secret I knew then
Will I ever have the chance again?
If I ran away, I'd never have the strength
To go very far
How would they hear the beating of my heart
Will it grow cold
The secret that I hide, will I grow old
How will they hear
When will they learn
How will they know
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, till then
It will burn inside of me
The truth is never far behind
You kept it hidden well
If I live to tell
The secret I knew then
Will I ever have the chance again?

So, you know, you should totally vid that.
*nods*

Why no, I haven't done any writing yet today. Sigh.
