Evan set his jaw and tapped his wand on the music stand. He had nearly killed himself ridding the common room of alcohol but he had done it and he wasn’t going to go to all that trouble for people not to pay attention. The familiar voice of Rodolphus Lestrange filled the air. A well aimed curse to the back of his head shut him up. There was a sarcastic comment from Rabastan as he mentioned the fact that now his brother wasn’t useable due to his unconscious state. Evan raised an eyebrow. “We don’t need him until the third section.” Noticing he had the room’s attention finally, he raised his wand and started conducting.
An eerie sound came from the back of the common room as Nikolai played the starting note. The frown on his face showed his level of concentration as his eyes read the music in front of him and his hands changed the sounds the double bass was making. His stool had been charmed to the floor so he didn’t fall off it as soon as his enthusiasm picked up.
The rest of the strings followed suit, each instrument coming in at different times. It wasn’t as if Evan was composing for a full sized orchestra, and so he had written separate parts for each individual in the room. Their parts were adapted to their playing style and ability which meant the entire score was literally tailored to fit the Slytherin common room of that time. It also meant that keeping everyone playing together was harder than usual but, after weeks of practice and extra care taken to make sure everyone was using the same timing, each part fell into place with near perfection.
Slowly the different pianists began to play. Rookwood came first, having demanded an easier part so he didn’t have to practice it as much. Pansy came next. Her part was played on the higher half off the keyboard. Rashnu’s part gave her part a sinister undertone and was played on the lower half of the keyboard. They weren’t sharing the same piano, however, Merlin no, but no one had dared ask Evan where he had gotten all of the instruments people had not brought to school with them. The pianos were soon accompanied by Adelaide on her harp. She added the link between strings and the percussion which meant the music had started to go somewhere.
Soon the music started getting louder. The violins were getting jagged discords. Low at first, but they got higher and higher as the music got louder. Rodolphus had regained consciousness and was ready for his entrance along with the flutes. It had been timed so that his part coincided with Bellatrix’s. Much like how Briallen’s part coincided with Rosalie’s. Each part of the piece had been very well thought out.
The flutes kicked in, and so did a string of bizarrely brilliant singing from Marishka and Esmeralda. The music was melting into itself and Evan could hear his masterpiece truly taking form, just as he had heard it as he wrote it. He smiled; it was getting closer to the best bit. The smile was cut short, however, as he aimed a relatively harmless spark at his future father. Nikolai was playing too loud for that particular part and, even if he was only slightly too loud, the younger Rosier could hear it.
There was a sudden cut off as the entire orchestra stopped bar the Lestrange brothers who carried on playing seamlessly, their violin sections weaving in and out of each other with perfect precision. They finished with a ragged screech but, instead of silence, the magic of the flute/cello duet that was Briallen and Rosalie started. Rivalen joined in with this section for portions in the middle, the low sounds from his cello giving an unearthly atmosphere to that section.
The solos, duets, etc. continued, with appearances from Alecto, Rashnu, Nikolai and Daphne. Daphne’s solo was particularly long, in comparison to others and it had more of a sorrowful melody to it. Evan noticed her raise her eyebrow at one point, but he had to look away to bring in others who randomly contributed to her solo.
The end of Daphne’s branch brought with it a slower tempo for the start of the finale. The dragging notes swept across the room, the cellos and double bass sounding lower notes, the singers, violins and flutes giving higher, more foreboding sounds. The volume began to pick up, however, the closer to the end it got. Evan wasn’t going to let this finish without a dramatic ending. A few members of the orchestra shifted in their chairs as they anticipated the finish. There was nothing more satisfying with a piece of music than to have a good close. And, you know, the promise of alcohol at the end of it.
A series of echoing chords with rising and falling speeds and volumes worked its way into the tune until they were the tune it is entirety. It gave a sort of spinning affect and then, without warning, the music cut off, mid-bar.
Evan leaned on his music stand, a content grin on his face. That had been brilliant. All that time spent composing had paid off and now, having heard it, Rosier stepped off his stand and sauntered to the dormitories, ready to move onto his next work of art.
